Afandou Beach
Best for. Anyone who wants length, space and clear water away from the resort crush, and does not mind a pebble shore.
Best spot. The organised sections near the access roads, where sunbeds and a taverna sit close, with quieter pebble stretches either side.
Know this. The shore is pebble and coarse sand and the water deepens fairly quickly, so water shoes help and toddlers need care.
Afandou is the answer for anyone who finds Faliraki and Tsambika too busy. It is a long beach, several kilometres of pebble and coarse sand running down the east coast beside the Afandou golf course, and its sheer length means it never feels crowded the way the resort beaches do. The water is clear and a touch deeper than the shallow family bays nearby, the backdrop is low green hills rather than hotel blocks, and the overall mood is calm and unhurried. For a quiet swim and room to spread out, it is one of the better choices on this coast.
The beach is organised in pockets rather than end to end. Where the access roads meet the shore you will find clusters of sunbeds, umbrellas and a taverna or two, while the long stretches in between are left largely to themselves, which is exactly the appeal for those who want space. The pebble keeps the water clear and clean, swimming is good if you are happy with a quick drop into deeper water, and the lack of loud beach bars makes for a more peaceful day than the resorts a few minutes north.
The honest read is that Afandou trades comfort for calm. The pebble and coarse sand shore is harder on bare feet than the soft sand of Tsambika, the water deepens faster than is ideal for the smallest children, and facilities thin out quickly once you wander from the access points, so you should bring water and shade if you plan to roam. None of that is a flaw if you know what you are choosing. For length, space, clear water and quiet, Afandou rewards you. For powder sand and full service, the busier beaches up the coast are the better fit, and they are only a short drive away.
Tavernas, not a club scene
Afandou is a long, quiet public beach with sunbed sections and tavernas rather than a beach club. For daybed lounges and music, the resort beaches up the coast offer more. Use the Rhodes beach clubs guide, and keep Afandou for the long, calm, clear water day with space to spare.
Sunbed sections and tavernas
Sunbed hire and tavernas cluster near the access roads along a long quiet beach. There is no branded club here, and operator details are to be confirmed locally.
East coast, by the golf course
Afandou beach runs along the east coast below the village of Afandou, around half an hour by car south of Rhodes town and just north of Kolymbia. Several access roads drop from the main coastal route and the golf course area down to different points along the shore, each with its own parking.
East coast buses between Rhodes town and the southern resorts stop in Afandou village on the main road, leaving a longer walk or a short taxi hop down to the beach itself. A car is the easiest way to reach the quieter sections and to move between the access points along this long shore.

Common questions about Afandou
Is Afandou beach quieter than Faliraki?
Yes, noticeably. Afandou is a long beach with organised sections near the access roads and quiet stretches in between, so it rarely feels crowded. Faliraki and Tsambika up the coast are busier and more developed. Afandou suits anyone wanting space and a calmer day.
Is Afandou beach sandy or pebbly?
Mostly pebble and coarse sand rather than soft powder. The pebble keeps the water clear, but it is harder on bare feet, so water shoes are worth packing. The smoother organised sections near the access roads are the easiest places to settle in.
Are there facilities at Afandou beach?
In sections. Sunbed hire and tavernas cluster where the access roads meet the shore, while the long stretches in between have little. If you plan to wander from the organised parts, bring water and shade, and treat opening times as to be confirmed.
Is Afandou beach good for swimming?
Yes, if you are happy with deeper water. The sea is clear and clean and deepens fairly quickly close in, which suits confident swimmers. There is limited lifeguard cover along the long shore, so supervise children and judge the conditions before going in.
How do you get to Afandou beach?
Afandou is on the east coast about half an hour by car south of Rhodes town, below Afandou village. Several access roads lead down to different points on the shore, each with parking. Buses stop in the village on the main road, leaving a longer walk or short taxi to the sand.
