The verdict

Best for. Visitors who want a smart, scenic west coast beach near upmarket hotels, and who are happy with a clean public bay rather than a wall of beach clubs.

Best spot. The northern end near the headland, where the sand is soft and the rocks at low tide reward a snorkel mask.

Know this. The famous beach clubs that once lined Surin were cleared from the sand in the beach reclamation, so the lively club scene has largely moved up the coast to Bang Tao.

Sand
Soft golden
A short, good looking bay of soft golden sand that shelves fairly steeply into the water.
Water
Calm in season, lively in monsoon
Usually a pleasant swim in the dry months. The drop off is quick and the monsoon brings real swell, so watch the flags.
Entry
Free public beach
The sand is public and free. The beachfront was cleared of permanent structures, so this is a walk in beach rather than a row of clubs.
Facilities
Modest on the sand
Some small vendors and seasonal stalls, with more cafes and restaurants on the road behind. Less commercial than it once was.
Lifeguard
Seasonal where posted
Flags and patrols operate in season but are not guaranteed year round. Treat a red flag as a clear no swim.
Best months
November to April
The dry season brings the calmest water, the clearest swimming and the most reliable sun on this coast.
The honest read

Surin has a reputation that runs ahead of the reality, so it pays to know the recent history. For years this was the beach club capital of Phuket, a short bay backed by a dense row of stylish loungers, bars and restaurants right on the sand. In the mid twenty tens a national beach reclamation cleared those permanent structures off the sand across Phuket, and Surin was the most visible casualty. What you find today is a cleaner, calmer and more natural bay than the one in older guidebooks.

That makes Surin a genuinely handsome public beach rather than the party strip it used to be. The sand is soft and golden, the setting is smart, and the surrounding area is some of the most upmarket on the island, with high end hotels and villas in the hills behind. The trade off is that the buzzing on sand scene is gone, and the lively club energy has largely moved a short way north to Bang Tao, where the big names now sit. If you arrive expecting rows of daybeds on Surin itself, you will find a quieter beach instead.

Taken for what it is now, Surin rewards the visitor who wants a good looking swim near good food and good hotels without a crowd on the sand. The water is usually calm and clear in the dry season, the northern end near the headland has soft sand and rocks worth a snorkel at low tide, and the cafes and restaurants on the road behind cover the lunch question. For the full beach club day, walk or ride the short distance to Bang Tao and read that guide first.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Surin is the clearest example on the island of the reclamation changing a beach. The permanent clubs on the sand were removed, so the modern scene is led by venues on the road behind and by the bigger clubs a short way north at Bang Tao, all in the Phuket clubs guide.

Cleared beachfront

Surin once carried Phuket most famous on sand beach clubs, but those permanent structures were removed in the beach reclamation. Today the sand is a clean public bay, so the daybed and cocktail scene has moved off the beach itself.

Restaurants on the road behind

A cluster of cafes and restaurants sits on the road behind the beach for lunch, sunset drinks and dinner. These are set back from the sand rather than on it, and offerings change, so confirm hours and any booking on the day.

Getting there and essentials

West coast, Phuket

Surin is on the west coast north of Kamala and just south of Bang Tao, around thirty to forty minutes by road from Phuket International Airport depending on traffic, which makes it one of the closer good beaches to the airport.

Most visitors arrive by taxi, a Grab car where available, or scooter. There is roadside parking near the access points, busier at weekends when locals come down for the evening.

Surin pairs naturally with Bang Tao to the north for a beach club day and with Kamala to the south for a livelier strip, so it makes a good anchor for exploring this run of coast.

Is Surin Beach worth visiting now?

Yes, if you take it for what it is today, a handsome and relatively calm public beach in an upmarket area. It is no longer a party strip on the sand, so set expectations for a good swim and good food nearby rather than rows of daybeds.

Can you swim at Surin Beach?

Usually yes in the dry season from November to April, when the water is calmer and clearer. The bay drops off fairly steeply and the monsoon brings real swell, so check the safety flags and keep a close watch on children.
