Rawai Beach
Best for. Food lovers and boat day planners who want fresh seafood and a launch point for island trips, rather than a classic sunbathing beach.
Best spot. The seafood market and grills along the front, and the pier where longtail boats leave for Coral Island and the southern coves.
Know this. Rawai is not really a swimming beach. The shore is shallow, rocky and lined with boats, so people come to eat and to set off by boat, not to bathe.
Rawai is the beach that confuses first timers who arrive with a towel and a swimsuit, because it is not really a beach for either. It is a working seafront on the southern tip of the island, a place of moored longtail boats, a busy pier and one of the best fresh seafood markets in Phuket. People come here to eat and to set off on the water, and once you understand that, Rawai becomes one of the more useful and characterful stops in the south rather than a disappointment.
The honest truth about the shore is that it is narrow, rocky and often murky, lined with boats and crossed by boat traffic, so swimming is neither pleasant nor sensible along most of it. What is excellent is the food. The seafront market lets you pick fresh fish, prawns, crab and shellfish and have a nearby restaurant cook it to order, and a meal here at sunset is a genuine island highlight. The pier alongside is the main launch point for trips to Coral Island and other southern spots, which is the other reason most visitors come.
So use Rawai for what it is. Come for a seafood lunch or dinner, plan an island boat day from the pier, and stroll the lively local seafront in the cooler hours. When you want to actually swim, the calm clean bay at Nai Harn and the small cove at Ya Nui are both just a short ride around the southern headland, so it is easy to combine a Rawai meal with a proper swim elsewhere in the same afternoon.
Clubs on this beach
Rawai is a seafood and boat hub rather than a beach club beach, so there is no daybed scene on the sand. The food market and the pier are the attractions. For a beach club day with loungers and a pool, the Phuket clubs guide points to Kata, Kamala and Bang Tao.

The heart of Rawai. Pick fresh fish, prawns, crab and shellfish from the market stalls and have a nearby restaurant grill it to order. It is one of the best value seafood experiences on the island, busiest and best at sunset. Prices vary by catch and are to be confirmed.
Longtail and speedboat pier
The pier is the main departure point for trips to Coral Island and the southern islands by longtail or speedboat. Operators and prices vary and should be agreed clearly before you set off, with island and weather conditions to be confirmed on the day.
No beach club on the sand
Because Rawai is a harbour foreshore rather than a bathing beach, there is no row of beach clubs or daybeds. For loungers, a pool and a swim, head around the headland to Nai Harn or up the coast to the bigger beaches.
South coast, Phuket
Rawai is on the southern tip of Phuket, around forty five minutes to an hour by road from Phuket International Airport depending on traffic. The seafront and seafood market run along the main shore road.
Most visitors arrive by taxi, Grab car where available, or scooter. There is parking along the seafront, which fills around the market at sunset when locals and visitors come to eat.
Rawai pairs naturally with Nai Harn and Ya Nui for swimming and with the Promthep Cape viewpoint for sunset, all a short ride away around the southern headland.
