Karon Beach
Best for. Couples and families who want a long, scenic beach with space to breathe and far less of the Patong frenzy.
Best spot. The northern end near Coast Beach Club at the Centara Grand, where the sand is bright and the setting relaxed.
Know this. The famous squeaky sand can shelve steeply and the monsoon brings strong surf, so heed the flags and swim with care.
Karon is the sensible middle child of Phuket's west coast, sitting between loud Patong to the north and pretty little Kata to the south. It is a long, generous beach of bright white sand that famously squeaks underfoot, and because it stretches so far it never feels as packed as Patong even in high season. For travellers who want the convenience of a developed beach without the frenzy, Karon hits a sweet spot that is easy to underrate.
The honest caveats are about the sea, not the scene. In the dry season Karon is calm and swimmable, but the beach shelves steeply in places, so the water can drop away quickly close to shore and the shorebreak can be punchy. Through the southwest monsoon from around May the surf builds and rip currents form, and the red flags that go up are there for good reason. As ever in Phuket, swim between the flags and treat a red flag as a no.
What Karon does best is space and ease. The front is lined with hotels, restaurants and lounger rentals rather than a wall of bars, so the mood is relaxed, and the northern end carries a proper beach club at the Centara Grand if you want a daybed and a pool. Come in the dry season, pick a spot away from the central access road where the crowd thins, and you have one of the most comfortable long beach days on the island.
Clubs on this beach
Karon is more about hotels, restaurants and rented loungers than a row of party clubs, but the northern end carries an established beach club at a major resort. Hours, entry policies and minimum spends are set by the venue and best confirmed before you go.

Set at the Centara Grand toward the northern end of Karon, Coast is a modern beach club with daybeds, cabanas and shaded loungers facing the bay, open to visitors as well as hotel guests. It leans relaxed by day and livelier in the evening. Entry and minimum spend are to be confirmed.
Beachfront lounger rentals
Along the front, organised lounger and umbrella sets give you a simple, low cost base on the sand without a club minimum. This is how most of Karon spends the day, spread out and unhurried. Rental prices are set locally and to be confirmed.
Hotel and restaurant frontage
The Karon beachfront is lined with hotels and restaurants rather than bars, which keeps the mood calm. Many have terraces and loungers for guests, and several restaurants open to the beach for an easy lunch. For a dedicated club day, the Centara is the spot.
West coast, Phuket
Karon sits on the west coast of Phuket just south of Patong, around forty five minutes to an hour by car from Phuket International Airport depending on traffic. Most visitors arrive by metered taxi, a ride hailing app or a hotel transfer, and local songthaews link Karon with Phuket Town and the neighbouring beaches.
The beach runs along a single coastal road, so most hotels are a short walk or quick ride from the sand. Karon is more spread out and less congested than Patong, parking is a little easier, and the run south to Kata or north to Patong takes only a few minutes by car when the road is clear.

Common questions about Karon Beach
Is Karon Beach good for swimming?
Yes in the dry season from about November to April, when the water is calm, though the beach shelves steeply in places so it deepens quickly close to shore. The southwest monsoon from around May brings strong surf and rip currents with red flags, so swim only between the flags and obey them.
Is Karon Beach less crowded than Patong?
Yes. Karon is longer and more spread out, lined with hotels and restaurants rather than a dense bar strip, so it feels far calmer than Patong even in high season. The ends of the beach are especially quiet, away from the central access road.
Why does the sand at Karon Beach squeak?
Karon is known for fine white sand that squeaks underfoot, a quirk of the small, rounded grains rubbing together as you walk. It is a harmless and distinctive feature of the beach that many visitors remember as much as the view.
Is there a beach club at Karon Beach?
Yes. Coast Beach Club at the Centara Grand toward the northern end has daybeds, cabanas and loungers facing the sea, and it is open to visitors as well as hotel guests. Most of the rest of the beach uses simple lounger rentals rather than clubs. Entry and minimum spend are to be confirmed.
When is the best time to visit Karon Beach?
The dry season from November to April is the best time, with calm, swimmable water, bright sand and reliable sun. The monsoon months from around May to October are quieter and cheaper but bring rougher seas and more rain.
