The verdict

  • Who it is for. Travellers who want a beach day with a tab of cold drinks and a fish curry on the sand, and who pick the coast to match the mood, calm and quiet in the south or loud and social in the north.
  • The pick. Palolem in the south for the prettiest safe swimming bay, with Agonda next door when you want the same beauty with fewer people.
  • The one thing to know. Goa is really two coasts. The north is busy, built up and lively, the south is calmer and greener, so decide which Goa you came for before you book a bed.
The lay of the coast

Two coasts, one state

Goa rewards anyone who works out which half they want before they arrive. The north around Baga, Calangute and Anjuna is the loud, commercial Goa of beach shacks, water sports and late nights, packed in the high season and thin on quiet. The south from Palolem down to Agonda and Patnem is greener, slower and far more about the sand than the scene.

The sea here is warm all year, which is the headline difference from a place like Cape Town, and the season is set by the monsoon rather than the temperature. The dry months from November to March are the time to come, with calm water, clear skies and every shack open. Through the monsoon from June to September many beaches shut their shacks and the sea turns rough.

We rank on the beach itself, the swimming and the kind of day each one gives, and we are honest about the trade. The famous northern names draw the crowds but rarely the best sand, while the southern bays ask for a longer drive and reward it with the Goa most people picture.

1
Crescent bay of Palolem Beach fringed with palms in south Goa
South Goa

Palolem

A near perfect crescent of soft sand wrapped around a calm, shallow bay and lined with palms and colourful huts. Verdict: the best all round beach in Goa, safe for swimming, lovely at sunset and still relaxed despite its fame, though the centre gets busy in peak season so walk to the quieter southern end.

2
Long quiet sweep of Agonda Beach backed by palms in south Goa
South Goa

Agonda

A long, broad ribbon of clean sand backed by palms and a string of low key huts, quieter and wilder than Palolem just over the headland. Verdict: the pick for a slow, peaceful beach day and the place sea turtles come to nest, though the surf can be stronger so take care swimming on a big day.

3
Rocky red cliffs above the sand at Anjuna Beach in north Goa
North Goa

Anjuna

A run of red rock and sand fringed with palms, famous for its Wednesday flea market and its long history as a free spirited corner of the north. Verdict: more about the cliff top cafes, the market and the sunset than easy swimming, with a rocky shore in places, so come for the atmosphere rather than a long lazy bathe.

Busy sand and shacks along Baga Beach in north Goa
North Goa

Baga

The busiest, most developed beach in the north, a wide strip lined wall to wall with shacks, water sports and the clubs of Tito's Lane behind it. Verdict: the heart of party Goa and great fun if that is the brief, but crowded and commercial, so skip it if you want calm and head south.

Wide calm sand at Morjim Beach in north Goa
North Goa

Morjim

A wide, flat sweep at the mouth of the Chapora river that has become the chic, slightly bohemian end of the north, with relaxed beach lounges and a calmer mood than Baga. Verdict: the northern beach for a smarter, quieter day, popular with a long staying crowd, though it is more about lounging than dramatic scenery.

Bohemian Arambol Beach at sunset in north Goa
North Goa

Arambol

The far north end of the strip, a bohemian gathering of drum circles, yoga and a sweet water lagoon tucked behind the headland. Verdict: the place to come for the alternative, free spirited Goa and a famous sunset drum session, though it is busy and basic, so manage your expectations on comfort.

The honest read

North or south, and when to come

The single most useful decision in Goa is north or south. If you want nightlife, water sports and a short transfer from the airport, the north around Baga and Calangute delivers, but you will share the sand with a great many people and the beaches are rarely the prettiest in the state. If you want the postcard, drive south to Palolem and Agonda for calm bays and far more space.

Be honest about the famous names. Baga and Calangute are the beaches everyone has heard of and they are also the most crowded and built up, so they top very few of our lists. The beaches worth the journey are quieter and greener, and the reward for the longer drive south is the Goa that first made the place famous.

Timing matters as much as place. The dry season from November to March is the time to come, with calm seas, open shacks and reliable sun, peaking over the Christmas and New Year weeks when prices climb and the south fills up. Through the monsoon from June to September many shacks close and swimming is often unsafe, so plan around the dry months.

Getting there and essentials

Planning your days

Goa is spread out, so distance shapes everything. The airport at Dabolim sits between the two halves, with the busy north about an hour north and the quiet south a similar drive down, and the roads can be slow in peak season. A scooter is the local way to hop between beaches in the north, while a taxi or a driver makes more sense for the longer southern runs.

Pack for warm, humid days and bring cash for the shacks, many of which prefer it. The sun is strong even when a sea breeze makes it feel mild, so sunscreen and water matter, and a light cover for the evening helps when the mosquitoes arrive. Agree any water sport or sun bed price before you commit, and keep an eye on the flags where a beach is patrolled.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Which is the best beach in Goa?

Palolem in the south is the best all round choice, a calm, pretty crescent that is safe for swimming and lovely at sunset. Agonda nearby is the pick for peace, Anjuna is best for the cliff top scene and market, and Baga is the heart of the northern nightlife if that is what you are after.

Is north or south Goa better?

It depends on the day you want. North Goa around Baga and Anjuna is lively, built up and easy to reach, with nightlife and water sports. South Goa from Palolem to Agonda is calmer, greener and prettier, with safer swimming and far more space, so choose south for relaxation and north for the scene.

When is the best time to visit Goa's beaches?

The dry season from November to March is the time to come, with calm seas, open shacks and reliable sunshine, peaking over Christmas and New Year. The monsoon from June to September brings rough seas and many shack closures, so it is best avoided for a beach trip.

Can you swim safely at Goa's beaches?

Many beaches are calm and good for swimming in the dry season, with Palolem's sheltered bay among the safest. Conditions vary by beach and day though, and currents can be strong on the open northern and southern stretches, so follow any flags, swim where it is patrolled and take care after rain.

Do Goa's beaches have beach clubs?

Goa runs more on beach shacks and a handful of beach lounges than on formal European clubs, though a few named venues offer a smarter day. We cover the options on our Goa beach clubs guide and mark prices and minimums to be confirmed where they are not published.
