The verdict

Best for. Surfers chasing a stronger wave, plus a younger crowd who want a driftwood beach club and a long sunset on black sand.

Best spot. La Brisa above the sand for the sunset, with the reef break a short paddle out front for those who can surf it.

Know this. Echo is a reef break over a rocky bottom, so it suits confident surfers far more than casual swimmers.

The honest read

Echo Beach sits at the northern end of the Canggu coast, where the sand turns to dark volcanic grit and the ocean throws up one of the area's better known reef breaks. It earns its name from the wave, a peaky left and right that breaks over reef and pulls a committed surf crowd from first light. Behind the sand, a row of warungs and a driftwood styled beach club have made it one of the most photographed sunset spots in this part of Bali.

The honest read is that Echo is a surfer's beach first and a sunset beach second, and only a swimming beach if you are careful. The break works over a rocky reef bottom that is exposed at low tide, the current can run, and the shore tends to dump rather than lap. Beginners are far better served a few minutes south at Batu Bolong, where the wave is softer and the sand more forgiving. Come to Echo to surf with some skill, or to claim a beanbag and watch others trade waves as the light goes.

Taken on those terms it is one of the most enjoyable corners of Canggu. The surf has real punch, the driftwood beach club brings a stylish mood to the sand, and the warung row keeps prices honest for a cold drink and a plate of nasi goreng. Arrive in the late afternoon, settle in before the crowd thickens, and let the sky do its work. For a sundowner with a wave breaking in front of you, Echo is hard to beat.

Clubs on this beach

Echo Beach is known for its driftwood beach club and the warungs strung along the sand, rather than a long row of large venues. The big party clubs sit a little south at Berawa. Hours, entry and minimum spends are set by each venue and are to be confirmed.

Beachfront warungs

Sand level warungs run behind the beach serving cold drinks, fresh coconuts and simple Indonesian plates from morning to sunset. These are casual, barefoot spots rather than a club, and a relaxed way to spend an afternoon by the surf.

Getting there and essentials

Northern Canggu coast, Bali

Echo Beach lies on the southwest coast at the northern edge of Canggu, roughly forty five minutes to an hour from Ngurah Rai International Airport depending on the heavy local traffic. The access road runs down through Pererenan and Canggu to a small parking area behind the warungs.

There is no public transport to the beach, so a hired scooter is the easiest way in and out of the narrow lanes, with taxis and ride hailing apps the alternative. Parking near the sand fills quickly before sunset, so arriving in good time or on two wheels saves a lot of waiting.

Common questions about Echo Beach Beach

Is Echo Beach good for swimming?

Not really. Echo is a reef break with a rocky bottom, a shore dump and a current that can run, so it is far better for surfing than casual swimming. For a gentler dip stay south at Batu Bolong, or head to the calm east coast at Sanur for proper swimming.

Is Echo Beach good for beginner surfers?

Less so than its neighbours. The wave breaks over reef and carries more power than the beach break at Batu Bolong, which is the better place to learn. Confident intermediates will enjoy Echo, ideally with a guide who knows the tide and the take off.

What is the best time to visit Echo Beach?

The late afternoon into sunset is the highlight, when the surf crowd thins and the beach club fills. For surfing, the dry season from April to October brings the cleanest conditions. Mornings are quieter if you prefer the sand to yourself.

Is La Brisa worth it at Echo Beach?

For the right traveller, yes. La Brisa is one of the most stylish and photographed beach clubs on the Canggu coast, built around a driftwood look, a pool and a strong sunset scene. It is about atmosphere and drinks rather than swimming, and entry and spends are to be confirmed.

How do I get from Canggu to Echo Beach?

It is a short scooter ride or a walk of a few minutes from the heart of Canggu and Batu Bolong, heading north along the coast. Traffic on the lanes is heavy around sunset, so two wheels or an early arrival is the simplest approach.
