Batu Bolong Beach
Best for. First time surfers and a social crowd who want a gentle wave, a wall of beach bars and an easy sunset.
Best spot. The bar row above the sand at sunset, with a surf lesson on the forgiving break earlier in the day.
Know this. This is the most beginner friendly break in Canggu, but it is still a surf coast rather than a swimming one.
Batu Bolong is the heart of the Canggu surf scene and the friendliest stretch of sand on the coast. Named for the temple that sits on the rocks at its northern end, it has a soft beach break that forgives mistakes, which is why almost every surf school in the area teaches here. Above the sand runs a wall of beach bars, surf shops and cafes, and the whole stretch hums from the dawn session to long after the sun has gone.
The honest read is that Batu Bolong is the easiest place to start surfing in Canggu, but it is still a surf coast and not a swimming beach. The wave is gentle by local standards, yet the line up can be crowded and beginners and longboarders share the same water, so a lesson and a little patience go a long way. The sea has currents and the sand is dark and coarse, so this is a place to learn, to watch and to socialise, rather than to swim in calm shallows.
Take it for the lively, low key surf town that it is and Batu Bolong is enormously good fun. The Lawn offers a poolside sunset above the sand, Old Man's is the famous beach pub that anchors the social scene, and the warungs keep a cold drink cheap and close. Book a morning lesson, claim a beanbag for the evening, and let the sunset crowd build around you. For an easy, sociable Bali beach day, this is the template.
Clubs on this beach
Batu Bolong is more about beach bars and surf shacks than large beach clubs, with a poolside sunset spot and a famous beach pub leading the way. Hours and minimum spends are set by each venue and are to be confirmed.

The famous beachfront pub that anchors the Batu Bolong social scene, with a sandy garden, cold beer and well known event nights. It is a bar and party spot rather than a club with daybeds. Event schedule and prices are to be confirmed.
Surf schools and warungs
Above the sand runs a row of surf schools, board hire shacks and warungs serving cheap, simple food and cold drinks. This is where most people book a lesson and grab lunch, and it keeps the whole stretch easy and affordable.
Central Canggu coast, Bali
Batu Bolong sits in the middle of the Canggu coast, roughly forty five minutes to an hour from Ngurah Rai International Airport depending on the heavy local traffic. The main beach road, lined with bars and shops, runs straight down to the sand and the temple.
There is no public transport, so a hired scooter is the favoured way to reach the beach and move along the coast, with taxis and ride hailing apps the alternative. Parking near the sand is tight and fills before sunset, so arriving early or on two wheels is the easier choice.

Common questions about Batu Bolong Beach
Is Batu Bolong good for beginner surfers?
Yes, it is the best place to learn in Canggu. The beach break is soft and forgiving and there are plenty of surf schools and board hire right on the sand. The line up can be crowded, so go early, take a lesson, and be patient with the busy water.
Is Batu Bolong Beach good for swimming?
Not really. It is a surf beach with a gentle wave but real currents and dark, coarse sand, so it is better for surfing and socialising than for swimming. For calm water, head to the reef sheltered east coast at Sanur or to Nusa Dua.
What is there to do at Batu Bolong besides surf?
Plenty. The bar row above the sand is one of the liveliest in Canggu, with beach pubs, cafes and sunset spots, and the temple at the northern end is worth a respectful look. Most people pair a morning surf with a long, social afternoon and sunset.
Is Old Man's worth visiting?
If you want the social side of Canggu, yes. Old Man's is the famous beachfront pub that anchors the Batu Bolong scene, with a sandy garden and well known event nights. It is a bar and party spot rather than a daybed club, and prices and schedules are to be confirmed.
When is the best time to visit Batu Bolong?
The dry season from April to October brings the cleanest learner waves and the most reliable sunsets. Mornings are best for surfing and quieter sand, while late afternoon into evening is when the bars and the social scene come alive.
