Canggu Beach
Best for. Surfers, digital nomads and a younger crowd who want black sand breaks, cafes and sunset beach clubs.
Best spot. Batu Bolong for the learner friendly break and the cluster of beachfront bars above the sand.
Know this. Canggu is volcanic black sand and a surf coast, so it is about waves, cafes and sunsets more than swimming.
Canggu is the coast that captured Bali's modern mood. A few kilometres north of Seminyak, its shoreline is a run of black volcanic sand broken into named breaks, with Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Berawa the best known, each with its own guide. What sets Canggu apart is not a single beach but the scene that has grown around it: surf at dawn, cafes and co working through the day, and beach clubs for the sunset. It has become the home of Bali's surfer and digital nomad crowd, and the energy is young, busy and self aware.
The honest read is that Canggu is a surf coast rather than a swimming one. The sand is dark and coarse, the water is working ocean with beach and reef breaks, and at low tide rocks and currents make casual swimming a poor idea. This is a place to learn or improve your surfing, to sit in a cafe with a laptop, and to claim a beanbag for the sunset, not to paddle in calm shallows. Traffic on the narrow lanes behind the beach has also become heavy, and the area's rapid growth divides opinion among those who knew it quieter.
Take it for what it is and Canggu is one of the most enjoyable stretches in Bali. Batu Bolong offers a forgiving break and a wall of beachfront bars, Echo Beach has a punchier wave and a famous sunset spot, and Berawa is home to one of the island's largest beach clubs. Base yourself here for the surf and the lifestyle, drift between the breaks by day, and end on the sand with a drink as the sky turns. For that rhythm, few places do it better.
Clubs on this beach
Canggu has some of Bali's best known beach clubs, spread along its breaks rather than on one beach. These established names sit on the Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Berawa stretches, each of which has its own guide. Hours, entry and minimum spends are set by each venue and are to be confirmed.

One of the largest and best known beach clubs in Bali, on the Berawa sand at the southern end of Canggu, with pools, daybeds and a lively party scene. Entry, reservations and minimum spends are to be confirmed.
Southwest coast, Bali
Canggu sits on the southwest coast a little north of Seminyak, roughly forty five minutes to an hour from Ngurah Rai International Airport depending on the notoriously heavy local traffic. The area spreads across several beach access points at Berawa, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach rather than a single entrance.
There is no public transport, so a hired scooter is the favoured way to move around the narrow, congested lanes, with taxis and ride hailing apps the alternative. Parking near the popular breaks fills quickly around sunset, so arriving early or on two wheels saves a good deal of frustration.

Common questions about Canggu Beach
Is Canggu Beach good for swimming?
Not especially. Canggu is a black sand surf coast with beach and reef breaks, and at low tide rocks and currents make casual swimming a poor idea. It is far better for surfing, cafes and sunsets. For calm swimming, the east and south coasts at Sanur or Nusa Dua are the better choice.
Which is the best beach in Canggu?
It depends on your day. Batu Bolong is the most beginner friendly break with the liveliest bars, Echo Beach has a punchier wave and a famous sunset, and Berawa is home to large beach clubs. Each stretch has its own guide, so pick the one that matches your plan.
Why is Canggu sand black?
Because it is volcanic. Bali's southwest coast carries dark grey to black sand formed from volcanic minerals, which is coarser and hotter underfoot than the golden sand further south. It is perfectly natural and part of what gives Canggu its distinctive look.
Is Canggu good for surfing beginners?
Yes, particularly at Batu Bolong, which has a forgiving break and plenty of surf schools and board hire nearby. Echo Beach is better suited to more experienced surfers. Go with an instructor, check the tide, and respect the rocks and currents at low water.
Are the Canggu beach clubs worth it?
For the right traveller, very much so. La Brisa, The Lawn and Finns are among the best known on the island and define the Canggu sunset scene. They are about atmosphere, pools and drinks rather than swimming in the sea, and entry policies and spends are to be confirmed.
