The Best Beaches for Snorkelling in Skiathos

Let a naturalist be honest from the start: Skiathos is famous for golden sand, and golden sand is not where the fish live. The pine backed strands that fill the postcards, Koukounaries above all, are glorious to swim from and almost empty beneath the surface, because a soft sandy floor gives marine life nothing to gather around. The Aegean here is wonderfully clear, often twenty metres of visibility or more, but that clarity rewards a snorkeller only where there is rock.

So the rule for this island is simple. Wherever the shore turns rocky, where a headland, a reef of stone or a pine fringed cove breaks the sand, the fish appear and the water shows them off. The Kalamaki peninsula on the south coast is the snorkeller's quarter, its small rocky coves at Tzaneria and Kanapitsa holding sea bream, wrasse and octopus among the stones, with a dive centre on hand and easy clear water close to shore.

The most cinematic snorkelling asks for a boat. Lalaria on the wild north coast, reachable only by sea, is a beach of smooth white marble pebbles below towering limestone cliffs, where the marble floor lifts the clarity to something extraordinary and small caves invite a careful look. The little island of Tsougria off the harbour, with its sheltered bays, is another rewarding boat snorkel on a calm day.

The naturalist's care is gentle here but real. Much of the life shelters in meadows of posidonia seagrass, the slow growing lungs of the Mediterranean, so never anchor on them, stand on them or tear at them, take nothing from the rocks and leave nothing behind. Koukounaries and the golden west coast strands are made for an easy swim and a lounger, with a bare sandy floor that gives a snorkeller little. The fish are a short distance away, wherever the coast turns rocky, and the Aegean's superb clarity shows them beautifully once there is structure to hold them.

The south coast is the snorkeller's quarter. A calm, clear morning before the wind and the day boats gives the best visibility, late spring through early autumn brings the warmest, clearest water, and the rocky entries reward reef shoes and a careful eye on the swell.
