Puglia is the heel of Italy, and it has two very different coasts to play with. The Adriatic side to the east is the more dramatic, with limestone cliffs, sea caves and pine backed bays around Otranto and the famous cove of Polignano a Mare. The Ionian side to the south and west is the softer one, a long ribbon of fine white sand and shallow turquoise water that has earned the Salento the nickname of the Maldive del Salento. Between the two you get more variety of beach than almost anywhere else in the country.

The honest read is that Puglia is no longer a secret, and in August it shows. The Italian summer holiday lands on these beaches in force, the free sand packs out by late morning and the parking near the best spots fills early, so the trick is to arrive early or travel in the shoulder weeks. The reward is water that genuinely rivals the tropics for clarity, at a fraction of the distance. Below we rank the beaches on sand, water, setting and the kind of day each one delivers.

1
Otranto

Baia dei Turchi

A protected bay just north of Otranto where fine white sand meets some of the clearest water on the Adriatic, backed by fragrant pinewood. Reached by a walk through the trees from the car park, which keeps it special.

Salve

Pescoluse

The heart of the Maldive del Salento, kilometres of soft white sand and water so shallow and luminous you can wade out for ages. Calm, warm and family friendly, with free sand and smart lidi side by side.

3
Porto Cesareo

Punta Prosciutto

A wild run of white dunes and emerald shallows at the top of the Porto Cesareo marine reserve. One of the most beautiful free beaches in the Salento, low rise and natural with the sea barely past your knees.

4
Melendugno

Torre dell'Orso

A generous sandy bay on the Adriatic framed by low cliffs and pine, with the twin sea stacks known as Le Due Sorelle offshore. Lively and well served, a reliable all rounder for a full beach day.

Polignano a Mare

Lama Monachile

The cinematic pebble cove between sheer limestone cliffs under the old bridge at Polignano a Mare. Small and very busy, more a spectacular swim and a photograph than a lounging beach, but unforgettable.

Porto Cesareo

Porto Cesareo

A busy resort town fronting a marine reserve of islets and pale shallows, with sand, boats and a good base for the surrounding beaches. Convenient and lively rather than pristine, but easy with children.

The honest read

Who it suits, who should skip

Who should skip what? If you want shallow, warm, calm water for small children, the Ionian coast at Pescoluse, Punta Prosciutto and Torre Lapillo is made for you, and the Adriatic is a touch deeper and cooler. If you want drama and a swim with a view, Polignano a Mare and Torre dell'Orso deliver scenery the flat Ionian beaches cannot. The classic mistake is going to Lama Monachile expecting to lounge all day, when it is a tiny, crowded cove best treated as a memorable dip rather than a base.

Logistics reward a car and an early start. The best beaches are spread along two coasts, many of the finest are free public sand with limited parking that fills by late morning, and August turns the whole region busy. Match the beach to the day, the shallow Ionian bays for families and easy swimming, the Adriatic coves for scenery and snorkelling, and the lidi at Gallipoli for a club day. Come in June or September and most of the squeeze disappears.

When to go

The best months in Puglia

Puglia month by month

Puglia's beach season runs from late spring into early autumn. July and August bring hot, dry days, the warmest sea and the heaviest crowds, the highest prices and the busiest beaches, so June and September are the sweet spot, with warm water, strong sun and more breathing room. May and early October are quieter and pleasant on warm days, though the sea is cooler and some lidi and boat trips wind down, so check before planning a day at the most popular spots. Our full calendar breaks the year down month by month.

All Puglia beach clubs

The beaches feed the clubs, and in Puglia the loudest scene lives at Baia Verde in Gallipoli, where Samsara Beach and Praja turn the beach club day into a party that runs late. For a calmer, more polished day there are elegant lidi along the Maldive del Salento at Pescoluse and smart establishments around Porto Cesareo. Elsewhere the model is the simple lido, a row of loungers and a bar on the free sand. Our full directory compares every club by beach and vibe, with any minimum spend confirmed when you enquire.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the best beach in Puglia?

For clear water and white sand, Baia dei Turchi near Otranto on the Adriatic and the Maldive del Salento at Pescoluse on the Ionian lead the field. For drama, the cliff framed cove of Lama Monachile at Polignano a Mare is unmatched. The best choice depends on whether you want shallow turquoise shallows, a pine backed bay or a cinematic cove.

Which Puglia beaches have the clearest, shallowest water?

The Ionian coast around Porto Cesareo, Punta Prosciutto and the Maldive del Salento at Pescoluse has the shallowest, most luminous water, warm and calm and ideal for families. On the Adriatic, Baia dei Turchi and Torre dell'Orso offer clear water with a touch more depth and a more sheltered, scenic setting.

Do you need to pay for beaches in Puglia?

Many of the best beaches have free public sand alongside private lidi that rent sunbeds and umbrellas for the day. You can almost always find a free stretch, though it fills early in summer. The lidi give you shade, loungers and a bar, which is worth the cost on a hot August day when the free sand is packed.

Where are the best beach clubs in Puglia?

The liveliest scene is at Baia Verde in Gallipoli, home to Samsara Beach and Praja, where the beach club day rolls into a party. For a calmer day there are smart lidi at Pescoluse and around Porto Cesareo. Our club directory compares each venue by beach and vibe, with any minimum spend confirmed when you enquire.

When is the best time to visit Puglia for the beach?

June and September are the sweet spot, with warm sea, strong sun and far more room than the July and August peak, when Italian holidays fill the coast and the parking. May and early October are quieter and pleasant on warm days, though the sea is cooler. The shoulder weeks are the easiest time to enjoy the free beaches.
