The honest read

Marina di Pescoluse is the small seaside village that sits behind the beach the whole of Italy seems to photograph, the long pale sand and shallow turquoise water nicknamed the Maldive del Salento. The village itself is modest, a low spread of holiday houses, lidi and a handful of bars and shops, but it matters because it is the most practical base for the deep south of the Salento, where many of the beaches are wild and short on services.

Think of the village and the beach as two halves of the same day. The sand and the famous shallow water run along the shore, while the village provides the parking, the lidi, the gelato and the cold drink that turn a beautiful but exposed beach into an easy family outing. That is the honest reason to point yourself here rather than at a more remote stretch, especially with small children and a lot of kit.

The water is the headline and it lives up to it. The entry is exceptionally gentle, shallow and warm a long way out, with sand so pale it turns the sea a tropical turquoise on a bright day. It is among the best beaches in Italy for toddlers and nervous swimmers for exactly that reason. The flip side is fame, so in August the village, the lidi and the parking all fill, and the dune backed sand can be busy at midday.

Who should skip it: anyone seeking a wild, empty cove will find this stretch too developed and too popular in peak season, and should head for the quieter beaches further along the coast. Who should go: families and easy swimmers who want the Salento finest shallow water with a village of services at their back. Come in June or September, or arrive early in August, and it is hard to fault.

Getting there and essentials

Marina di Pescoluse sits at the southern end of the Salento on the Ionian coast, in the municipality of Salve, not far from the tip of the heel at Santa Maria di Leuca. The village fronts the famous Maldive del Salento beach and forms the most serviced base in this corner of Puglia.

A car is the practical way in, and there is parking among the lidi and the village streets that fills early on summer days, so arrive before mid morning. The beachfront is flat and easy to walk, which suits families with buggies and cool boxes far better than the wilder beaches nearby.
