The honest read

Torre dell'Orso is one of the Adriatic Salento most popular beaches, a wide crescent of soft golden sand framed by low limestone cliffs and a backdrop of pine. At the southern end stand the Due Sorelle, the two sea stacks named the Two Sisters for the local legend, rising from clear blue water. It is a generous, well served bay that works for a full beach day rather than a quick dip, which sets it apart from the smaller Adriatic coves.

Its popularity is also the honest caveat. Torre dell'Orso is no secret, and in July and August the sand and the village car parks fill early with Italian families on holiday, so it can feel busy and built up around the resort behind the beach. It is not the place for solitude. But the bay is broad enough to absorb the crowds better than the tiny coves, and outside peak weeks or early in the day it returns to a relaxed, scenic beach.

The water is clear and sheltered in the bay, with a sandy bottom and a gentle entry that suits most swimmers and children, calmer than the open Adriatic coast nearby. The cliffs and the pine give shade and a sense of enclosure, and the Due Sorelle stacks make a fine target for a swim and a landmark for photographs. A row of lidi and bars lines the back of the beach for shade, loungers and food.

Who should skip it: anyone wanting a wild, undeveloped cove, who will prefer Baia dei Turchi or Porto Selvaggio nearby. Who should go: families and anyone who wants a full service sandy bay with clear sheltered water and a striking setting. Come in June or September, or early in the day, for the best of it.
