Baia dei Turchi is the Adriatic Salento natural jewel, a string of small white sand coves a few kilometres north of Otranto, backed by dense, fragrant pinewood. Part of a protected oasis and listed among the special places safeguarded by the FAI, it has water of a clarity that rivals anywhere in Puglia, transparent and blue over a gently shelving bottom. The name recalls the landing of Ottoman troops here in 1480 before the siege of Otranto, which gives the lovely bay a dramatic history.
The honest part is access and size. You reach the coves on foot, by a path through the pinewood from a car park set back from the shore, which keeps the cars and much of the development at bay and is part of the charm. But the sandy stretches are small, and in July and August they fill early and the parking overflows, so the protected setting does not mean you will have it to yourself in peak season. Come early or in the shoulder weeks for the quiet, clear water that makes the place special.
The water is the headline, clear and clean with a gentle entry that suits families and easy swimmers, and the pine behind gives shade and scent that the open beaches lack. Facilities are deliberately minimal, a kiosk or two rather than rows of lidi, in keeping with the protected status, so this is a come prepared beach. The reward is one of the most beautiful and natural swims on the whole Adriatic coast of Puglia.
Who should skip it: anyone wanting full facilities, easy parking right on the sand and a lido day, who will prefer Torre dell'Orso nearby. Who should go: anyone who will walk a few minutes through the pines for some of the clearest water in Puglia and a wild, protected setting. Arrive early, travel light, and Baia dei Turchi delivers.
Baia dei Turchi is a protected natural bay rather than a club beach, so there are no rows of lidi on the sand and facilities are kept deliberately minimal. For a serviced day with sunbeds, the Puglia club directory is the place to plan one elsewhere on the coast.
No beach club sits on these protected coves. Plan a serviced day with sunbeds through the destination directory below.

Yes, you reach the coves on foot by a short path through the pinewood from a car park set back from the shore. The walk keeps cars and development away from the sand and is part of what keeps the bay special.
The water is clear and gently shelving, which suits families and easy swimmers, but the sandy coves are small and facilities are minimal, so bring shade and supplies. It is calmer and cleaner than many busier beaches nearby.
