Paros has a reputation as a windsurf island, and on the open coasts that is earned, but it also has a string of calm, shallow, sheltered bays that work beautifully for families. The trick is knowing which side of the island to be on. The southeast and the open north take the brunt of the Meltemi, the dry summer wind, while the sheltered east coast bays and the protected coves around Parikia stay much gentler for most of the season.

We have ranked the beaches below for the things that matter on a family day. Calm, shallow entry, organised sunbeds and shade, food within reach and easy access by road or the little water taxis that hop across Parikia bay. We have also been honest about which famous names to time carefully with small children, because a beach that turns to chop and blowing sand by afternoon is no place for a toddler.

If you take one line from this page, take this one. Base your family days on the sheltered east coast around Logaras and Piso Livadi and the calm bays around Parikia such as Marcello, treat the windsurf beaches as morning swims or active outings, and keep an eye on the forecast, because the Meltemi decides which bay is calm on any given day.

The family beaches worth your day

Calm water and easy services first, scene second.

01
East coast

Logaras

The clearest family choice on the island. A sheltered east coast bay next to Piso Livadi with soft sand, calm shallow water and a line of tavernas and sunbeds right behind the beach. It sits out of the worst of the Meltemi, so the swimming stays gentle and the logistics are easy with children.

02
Parikia Bay

Marcello

A natural pool minutes from Parikia. The water is exceptionally shallow and calm over a soft sandy bottom, so children can wade out a long way safely, and a beach club and sunbeds sit behind the sand. The water taxi over from the harbour turns the day into a small outing.

03
Northeast

Santa Maria

A well organised stretch of pale sand and clear shallow water with sunbeds, beach bars and watersports. It is lovely on a calm morning and great for older children, though it sits more open to the wind, so check the forecast and favour the earlier, gentler hours.

04
Southeast

Golden Beach

The island's longest sweep, and on a calm morning the northern end is a generous, spacious family swim with gently shelving shallows. The same exposure brings the afternoon wind for the boards, so come early and treat a windless morning as the prize.

05
Parikia Bay

Krios

A quiet sandy bay across the water from Parikia, reached by a short water taxi, with calm shallow water and a relaxed taverna. It is low key rather than grand, which suits families who want an easy, peaceful day and a little boat trip rather than a busy scene.

The honest read

The honest read for families

The wind is the thing nobody warns you about. Paros is one of the windier islands in the Cyclades, and the Meltemi blows hard through high summer, especially July and August. It hits the southeast windsurf beaches and the open north hardest, kicking up chop and blowing sand, so the calm family days are almost always on the sheltered east coast or in the protected bays around Parikia. Check the forecast, and if the Meltemi is up, head for shelter.

Be honest with yourself about the windsurf beaches. Golden Beach and New Golden Beach are superb, but their gift is wind, which is the opposite of a relaxed paddle with a toddler. The water can be lovely first thing, so treat them as early swims or active outings for older children rather than all day family bases, and move on when the breeze fills in. Lageri, beautiful as it is, has no facilities and naturist use in places, so it is not a family base either.

The sheltered coasts solve most of the problems. Logaras, Marcello and Krios give you calm shallows, sunbeds, shade and tavernas within a few steps, and the Parikia water taxis make a beach day feel like an outing without a long drive. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, and there are no lifeguards to rely on as a rule, so keep young children close and let the wind, not the photos, choose your beach.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Paros beaches are best for families with young children?

The sheltered bays are the family choice, with Logaras on the calm east coast the standout for its shallow water and tavernas a few steps from the sand. Marcello and Krios near Parikia are exceptionally shallow and calm, reached by an easy water taxi. They sit out of the worst of the Meltemi, which makes for gentler swimming days.

Are there beaches in Paros to avoid with kids?

Not to avoid, but to time. Golden Beach and New Golden Beach are windsurf venues where the Meltemi brings chop and blowing sand by afternoon, so they suit a calm early swim rather than a long family day. Lageri is beautiful but undeveloped, with no facilities and naturist use in places, so it is not a family base.

Is the wind a problem for families in Paros?

It can be. The Meltemi, a dry north wind, blows hard in high summer and hits the southeast and open north beaches hardest with chop and blowing sand. The sheltered east coast and the Parikia bays stay much calmer, so on a windy day head for shelter. Always check the forecast, because the wind decides which beach is comfortable.

Do Paros family beaches have sunbeds and tavernas?

The main sheltered beaches are well organised, with rows of sunbeds, umbrellas and tavernas right behind the sand at Logaras, Marcello and Santa Maria. Prices vary and are set locally, which we mark as to be confirmed, but you will not be short of shade, food or a place to leave your things on these bays.

How do you get to the family beaches in Paros?

The east coast beaches such as Logaras are an easy drive from Parikia or Naoussa, while Marcello and Krios near Parikia are reached by a short water taxi from the harbour, which children tend to love. By car, parking near the popular beaches fills early in peak season, so arrive in good time for a space and the calmer morning water.
