Tropical Beach
Best for. Families and groups who want an easy, convenient swim and a barbecue near Naha, with calm netted water and full facilities, not a wild or natural shore.
Best spot. The netted swim area in the morning before the barbecue groups arrive, or the grass and path by the marina at sunset, with the boats and the sea light ahead.
Know this. This is engineered urban sand, calm and handy but not natural. For reef, dunes and real quiet, head north to the Onna coast or out to the islands.
Tropical Beach is an honest piece of city engineering, and it is fairest to judge it as exactly that rather than against the wild shores of the islands. It sits in Ginowan on the central west coast, a neat crescent of brought in sand wedged between the marina and the Okinawa Convention Center, with a calm netted swim, a popular barbecue area and the full run of changing rooms, showers and car parks. Twenty to thirty minutes from Naha, it is one of the most convenient beaches near the city, and on a warm weekend it fills with local families and groups firing up barbecue sets while children paddle in the sheltered water. For an easy swim and a cookout close to town, it does the job very well.
The honest catch is in the name's promise. Tropical Beach is not, in any wild sense, tropical. It is a man made urban beach on a built coast, calm and tidy and useful, but with no reef to snorkel, no dunes, no real sense of nature, and on a busy day the smoke and noise of the barbecue crowd is part of the deal. None of that is a failing, it is simply what the beach is for, and pretending otherwise would do a visitor no favours. A naturalist will enjoy the marina birds, the open sea light and an early morning swim, but will not find here the living coast that makes Okinawa special.
So take Tropical for the easy, sociable city beach it is, a safe netted swim for the children, a barbecue with friends, a sunset stroll along the marina path with the boats rocking and the light going soft over the East China Sea. Swim inside the enclosure, follow the lifeguards, and carry your barbecue litter out so the next group inherits clean sand. Then, when you want the real Okinawan sea, drive north to the natural beaches of the Onna coast, or take a boat to the Kerama islands where the clear reef and the quiet that a city beach can only hint at are waiting. Tropical is the handy beach by the city. The wild ones are a little further on.
City beach, not a club
Tropical is a managed public city beach with a barbecue area, not a daybed club, run with changing rooms, showers and a netted swim beside the marina. The serviced resort beaches of Okinawa sit north on the Onna coast. We describe what is here honestly and mark anything we cannot verify as to be confirmed. To plan a resort style day, start with the Okinawa clubs guide.

The serviced side here is the city park kind, changing rooms, showers, toilets and a popular barbecue area with sets and equipment to hire from operators, beside the marina and convention centre. A lifeguard covers the netted swim in season. It is public beach and operator service rather than a private club, and barbecue booking, activities, prices and hours are set by the operators, so treat any figure as to be confirmed.
Araha Beach nearby
A little north in Chatan, Araha is the longer park beach of the central strip, a netted swim with a jogging track and a pirate ship playground, beside the shops of American Village. It suits a family day much like Tropical and pairs well on a central coast loop. It is a public park beach rather than a club, so there are no daybeds, only easy sand.
Onna coast resort beaches
For a serviced resort day with daybeds and a marine menu, the Onna coast to the north is the place to look, with resort beaches such as Manza running loungers, activities and seasonal day passes. It is a short drive from Ginowan and the spot for a polished club style day. Operators, seasons and prices are set by the venues and are to be confirmed.
Ginowan, by the marina
Tropical Beach sits in Ginowan on the central west coast of Okinawa, beside Ginowan Marina and the Okinawa Convention Center, about twenty to thirty minutes by car from Naha. There is no train to the beach, so most visitors drive or take a bus, with car parks nearby. It is one of the most convenient beaches close to the city.
Come early for a calm swim before the barbecue groups arrive, swim inside the netted enclosure while the lifeguard is on duty, and carry your barbecue litter out. For natural reef and quiet, head north to the Onna coast or take a boat to the Kerama islands. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
