The verdict

Best for. Travellers and families who want calm, clear water, a real reef and a full menu of marine activities in one easy, well run place on the central island.

Best spot. A boat snorkel out to the coral reef in the morning calm, then the headland walk at Cape Manzamo next door for the sunset over the sea.

Know this. This is a polished resort bay, not a wild cove, busy with activities in peak summer, so for empty natural sand cross to the Kerama or Miyako islands.

The honest read

Manza is the polished face of the Onna coast, and it earns its reputation honestly. The bay sits within a coastal quasi national park beneath the dramatic cliffs of Cape Manzamo, a sheltered crescent of soft white sand and clear, calm water that was named among only a small number of Okinawa beaches on Japan's hundred best list. It is the managed beach of a resort, which is exactly why it is so clean, calm and well run, and why it carries one of the widest ranges of marine activities anywhere in the prefecture, from boat snorkelling over the reef to paddle boards and a small tour submarine.

The honest catch is in that word resort. Manza is a comfortable, serviced bay rather than a wild Okinawan shore, and in peak summer it hums with activities, a large inflatable ocean park and resort guests, which is wonderful for a lively family day and the opposite of solitude. For a naturalist the real treasure here is just offshore and just along the coast, the vivid coral reef you can boat snorkel over, and the headland at Cape Manzamo where the elephant trunk rock frames one of the finest sunsets on the island.

So the verdict is warm but clear eyed. Come to Manza for calm water, an easy reef and a full menu of things to do, ideally in the gentler shoulder months and the morning calm before the day fills up. Take the boat snorkel, walk the cape at sunset, and enjoy one of the best equipped beaches on the main island. Then, when you want wild and empty sand, give the Kerama and Miyako islands the days they deserve. Manza is Okinawa at its most comfortable, not its most wild.

Onna village, central Okinawa

Manza Beach sits in Onna village on the central west coast of Okinawa's main island, within the resort strip and beneath the cliffs of Cape Manzamo. Most visitors drive, about an hour to ninety minutes from Naha on the expressway, with resort parking, while buses run along the Onna coast. The beach pairs naturally with the cape next door.

Bring sun cover, water and reef safe sunscreen, take a boat snorkel out to the reef rather than wading over the coral, and swim within the netted area while the beach is supervised. Confirm access and any day use fee with the resort before you go, and add the Cape Manzamo headland for sunset. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
