It sits in Chatan on Okinawa's central west coast, a soft, man made crescent of white sand a single minute's walk from the shops and restaurants of Mihama American Village. The water is calm and sheltered behind breakwaters, the swimming easy, and when the day folds down over the East China Sea the whole little bay glows and the sky puts on the show the place is named for. The honest catch is that everything here is built. The sand was brought in, the bay engineered, and the backdrop is hotels, restaurants and a Ferris wheel rather than dunes and reef. The barbecue area can fill with large parties, the swim is pleasant rather than memorable, and a naturalist will find no quiet coves or grazing reef here, only a well run urban beach doing its job.

Then point the car north or take a ferry west when you want the real thing. The Kerama islands hold clear reef and turtles, and the natural coast around Motobu has living sand the engineered shore at Chatan can only stand in for. It suits a calmer day than the lively sand at Sunset. It is a public park beach rather than a club, so there are no daybeds to book, only easy space close at hand.
Onna coast resort beaches
For a serviced resort day with daybeds and a marine menu, the Onna coast to the north is the place to look, with resort beaches such as Manza running loungers, activities and seasonal day passes. Chatan, by American Village
Sunset Beach sits in Chatan on the central west coast of Okinawa, a minute's walk from Mihama American Village and about forty minutes by car from Naha. There is no train, so most visitors drive or take a bus, with parking around American Village. It is one of the easiest beaches to reach for a half day from the central resort strip.
Come in the last hour of light for the sunset the beach is named for, swim inside the marked area while the lifeguard is on duty, and book the barbecue area ahead in summer.
