The verdict

Best for. City based travellers who want an easy, calm swim and a famous sunset over the East China Sea, steps from the shops and restaurants of Mihama American Village.

Best spot. The water's edge in the last hour of light, when the man made bay glows and the sky does the work, rather than the busy midday sand.

Know this. This is an engineered city beach backed by buildings, so for wild sand, dunes and reef leave Chatan for the Kerama islands or the northern coast.

Sand
Pale, brought in
Soft white sand laid for a man made beach, kept clean and gently shelving. It is a tidy, engineered shore built for easy swimming and the view, not a natural coast.
Water
Calm, sheltered
Sheltered, gentle water with low waves behind the breakwaters, which makes it easy for families and casual swimmers. Clarity is fair for a city beach, not the clear reef of the islands.
Entry
Free
Entry is free, with showers, lockers and a barbecue area charged separately. Operators set the figures, so treat any price as to be confirmed.
Facilities
Full
Toilets, showers and lockers, a barbecue area and the whole of American Village a minute away for food and shops. As a managed city beach it is very well equipped.
Lifeguard
In season
A lifeguard is usually on duty through the swimming season and a swim area is marked. Stay inside it and read the day. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Best months
Mid April to October
The swimming season runs about mid April to the end of October, often into the evening in midsummer. The sunset is the highlight, so the shoulder months are quieter for it.
The honest read

Sunset Beach earns its name and is honest about its nature, which is more than many city beaches manage. It sits in Chatan on Okinawa's central west coast, a soft, man made crescent of white sand a single minute's walk from the shops and restaurants of Mihama American Village. The water is calm and sheltered behind breakwaters, the swimming easy, and when the day folds down over the East China Sea the whole little bay glows and the sky puts on the show the place is named for. For a casual swim and a sundowner, it works.

The honest catch is that everything here is built. The sand was brought in, the bay engineered, and the backdrop is hotels, restaurants and a Ferris wheel rather than dunes and reef. That makes it convenient and lively, popular with families and young locals, and busy on summer evenings, but it is the opposite of wild. The barbecue area can fill with large parties, the swim is pleasant rather than memorable, and a naturalist will find no quiet coves or grazing reef here, only a well run urban beach doing its job.

So use Sunset for exactly what it offers, an easy swim, a barbecue with friends and one of the more reliable sunsets near the city, with everything you need a step away in American Village. Then point the car north or take a ferry west when you want the real thing. The Kerama islands hold clear reef and turtles, and the natural coast around Motobu has living sand the engineered shore at Chatan can only stand in for. Next door, Araha offers a longer, greener park beach for a calmer day.

The club layer

City beach, not a club

Sunset is a managed city beach beside American Village, not a daybed club, with showers, lockers and a barbecue area on the sand. The serviced resort beaches sit to the north on the Onna coast. We describe what is here honestly and mark anything we cannot verify as to be confirmed. To plan a resort style day, start with the Okinawa clubs guide.

Sunset Beach showers and barbecue area

The serviced side here is simple city beach hire, with showers, lockers and a popular barbecue area on the sand, and a lifeguard in season, with the whole of American Village a minute away for food and shops. It is run as a public beach rather than a private club, and prices and hours are set by the operators, so treat any figure as to be confirmed.

Araha Beach next door

A short walk along the coast, Araha is the longer, greener city beach of Chatan, a six hundred metre park shore with a netted swim area, a jogging track and a pirate ship playground. It suits a calmer day than the lively sand at Sunset. It is a public park beach rather than a club, so there are no daybeds to book, only easy space close at hand.
