Araha Beach
Best for. Families and slow locals who want a long, green park beach with a calm netted swim, a jogging track and a pirate ship playground, away from the busier sand at Sunset next door.
Best spot. The northern end of the netted swim area in the morning, with the park's shade and walkway behind you, before the afternoon brings the picnic crowds.
Know this. Swim inside the netted, lifeguarded enclosure, as jellyfish drift through in season, and for clear reef and wild sand leave Chatan for the Kerama islands or the northern coast.
Araha is the gentle, green city beach of Chatan, and it is honest to praise it for that rather than pretend it is wild. A short walk up the coast from the livelier sand at Sunset, it runs about six hundred metres of clean pale sand backed by Araha Park, a long strip of grass, walkway and shade that locals jog, cycle and walk their dogs along all day. The swim sits inside a netted, lifeguarded enclosure that keeps out the occasional jellyfish, calm and clear enough for a child's first paddle, and a full size pirate ship called the Indian Oak anchors the playground behind.
The honest catch is the same as any mainland city beach. This is brought in sand on an engineered shore, not a living coast, so there is no reef to snorkel and no quiet cove to find, and on a summer weekend the park and its picnic tables fill with families and parties. None of that is a fault, it is simply what Araha is, one of the best run easy beaches near the central resort strip, made for calm swims and lazy afternoons rather than wild nature. A naturalist will enjoy the green walkway and the birds along it, but will look elsewhere for reef.
So treat Araha as the easy day it is, a netted swim, a long walk or run in the park, a pirate ship for the children and a kiosk never far away, with the shops of American Village close by. Keep to the enclosure, follow the lifeguards and pack out what you bring. Then, when you want the real Okinawan sea, head north to the natural coast at Motobu or take a ferry to the Kerama islands, where the clear reef and turtles live that a city park beach can only point you toward.
Park beach, not a club
Araha is a managed city park beach, not a daybed club, with changing rooms, showers, lockers and kiosks and a park full of facilities behind. The serviced resort beaches sit to the north on the Onna coast. We describe what is here honestly and mark anything we cannot verify as to be confirmed. To plan a resort style day, start with the Okinawa clubs guide.

The serviced side here is run as part of Araha Park, with changing rooms, showers, lockers and kiosks by the sand, a lifeguard on the netted enclosure in season, and marine activities such as dragon boating and kayaking offered seasonally. It is public park service rather than a private club, and activities, prices and hours are set by the operators, so treat any figure as to be confirmed.
Sunset Beach next door
A short walk along the coast, Sunset is the livelier city beach of Chatan, a man made crescent beside American Village known for its barbecue area and its glowing evening view over the East China Sea. It suits a sundowner and a social swim more than a calm family day. It is a public beach rather than a club, so there are no daybeds, only easy sand close at hand.
Onna coast resort beaches
For a serviced resort day with daybeds and a marine menu, the Onna coast to the north is the place to look, with resort beaches such as Manza running loungers, activities and seasonal day passes. It is a short drive from Chatan and the spot for a polished club style day. Operators, seasons and prices are set by the venues and are to be confirmed.
Chatan, beside Araha Park
Araha Beach sits in Chatan on the central west coast of Okinawa, beside Araha Park and a short walk from Mihama American Village, about forty minutes by car from Naha. There is no train, so most visitors drive or take a bus, with three free park car parks open through the day. It is one of the easiest family beaches to reach from the central resort strip.
Come early on summer weekends for space and calmer water, swim inside the netted enclosure while the lifeguard is on duty, and use the shaded picnic tables and playground for an easy long day. For wild sand and reef, head north to Motobu or take a ferry to the Kerama islands. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
