Emerald Beach
Best for. Families and first time visitors who want a calm, clean, well equipped beach with soft coral sand, paired easily with the Churaumi Aquarium next door.
Best spot. The sheltered swimming lagoon in the morning light, before the aquarium crowds spill over, when the water is glassy and the sand is freshly raked.
Know this. This is a managed park beach, not a wild shore, so for truly wild sand and reef cross to Sesoko or head out to the Kerama and Miyako islands.
Emerald Beach is the easy win of the Motobu coast, and it is honest to call it that rather than to oversell it. It sits inside Ocean Expo Park, right beside the famous Churaumi Aquarium, a Y shaped sweep of pale coral sand wrapped around a sheltered lagoon. Everything about it is engineered for a comfortable day, the calm netted water, the certified top quality of the sea, the three sections for play, rest and the view, the showers and lockers and lifeguards. It was named among Japan's hundred best bathing beaches, and on a bright morning it genuinely glows.
The honest catch is in that very word, engineered. This is a man made beach, a beautifully kept park lagoon rather than a wild Okinawan shore, so you trade the rough magic of a natural reef beach for calm, clean convenience. For families, first time visitors and anyone pairing the beach with the aquarium, that trade is a clear win, and there is no better easy swim on this stretch of coast. For a naturalist chasing living reef and empty sand, it is a pleasant stop rather than the main event.
So the verdict is warm but clear. Come to Emerald for a calm, reliable, family friendly beach day, ideally in the gentler shoulder months and early in the morning before the aquarium crowds drift over. Then, when you want the wild side of Okinawa, cross the bridge to Sesoko for a natural reef snorkel, or give the Kerama and Miyako islands the days they deserve. Emerald is the comfortable doorway to the Motobu coast, not its wildest room.
Loungers and the park
Emerald has no glossy daybed beach club. It is a managed park beach with rental lounges and a kiosk, with the resort beaches of the wider Motobu and Onna coasts nearby. We name what is here honestly and mark anything we cannot verify as to be confirmed. To plan a serviced resort day elsewhere, start with the Okinawa clubs guide.

The beach is run by Ocean Expo Park, which provides the serviced side of a day here, rental lounges reported from around one thousand yen, a kiosk and snack stand, showers, lockers and beach volleyball. It is simple park style service rather than a private club, and prices and opening hours are set by the park, so treat any figure as to be confirmed.
Motobu and Sesoko resort beaches
For a more serviced resort day with daybeds and watersports, the wider Motobu Peninsula and nearby Sesoko island hold resort beaches a short drive away. These run their own loungers, activities and any day passes seasonally, and access, charges and current openings change through the year, so we mark them as to be confirmed with each property.
Onna coast beach clubs
The most serviced beach days in this part of Okinawa sit on the Onna coast to the south, where resort beaches such as Manza run loungers, marine activities and day passes. It is a drive from Motobu but the place to look for a polished club style day. Operators, seasons and prices are set by the venues and are to be confirmed.
Motobu Peninsula, north Okinawa
Emerald Beach sits inside Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula in the north of Okinawa's main island, right beside the Churaumi Aquarium. Most visitors drive, about ninety minutes to two hours from Naha on the expressway, with free parking at the park lots, while buses run from Naha and the resort areas. The beach pairs naturally with the aquarium for a full day.
Come early in peak summer to beat the aquarium crowds, bring sun cover, water and reef safe sunscreen, and swim only within the netted area while lifeguards are on duty. To add a wilder swim, cross the bridge to Sesoko island for a natural reef snorkel, or build the outer islands into a longer trip. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Common questions about Emerald Beach
Is Emerald Beach in Okinawa worth visiting?
Yes, especially with children or after the Churaumi Aquarium next door. Emerald is a beautifully kept man made beach in a sheltered lagoon, with calm, clean water rated top quality, soft coral sand and full facilities, all free to enter. It is more managed park than wild shore, so for truly wild sand head to Sesoko or the outer islands, but for an easy, reliable beach day on the Motobu coast it is a strong choice.
Is Emerald Beach man made?
Yes. Emerald Beach was created inside Ocean Expo Park as a Y shaped run of coral sand within a sheltered lagoon, often described as the only beach inside a lagoon in Japan. It is divided into three sections, a beach for play, a beach for rest and a beach for the view. Being engineered keeps the water calm and the sand clean, which makes it easy and family friendly, if less wild than a natural shore.
When can you swim at Emerald Beach?
The official swimming season runs from about the start of April to the end of October, when the lagoon is netted against jellyfish and lifeguards and facilities are in place. Outside that window you can walk the sand but the swimming area and nets are usually closed. Always swim within the marked area in season, follow the lifeguards and remember conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Does Emerald Beach cost money?
No, entry is free, as is parking at the Ocean Expo Park lots whether you are visiting the beach or the Churaumi Aquarium. You pay only for extras such as a rental lounge, reported from around one thousand yen, and food or drinks from the kiosk and snack stand. Prices are set by the park and change, so treat any figure as to be confirmed on the day.
What facilities does Emerald Beach have?
Plenty, as a managed park beach. There are showers, toilets, lockers, a kiosk and snack stand, rental lounges, beach volleyball, and lifeguards and medical staff on duty during the swimming season. The water has been certified top quality and the beach was named among Japan's 100 best bathing beaches. It is one of the most comfortable, well equipped beaches in Okinawa for a family day.
How do you get to Emerald Beach?
Emerald Beach sits inside Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula in the north of Okinawa's main island, right beside the Churaumi Aquarium. Most visitors drive, with free parking at the park, about ninety minutes to two hours from Naha by the expressway, or come by bus. It pairs naturally with the aquarium and the nearby island of Sesoko for a full day on the Motobu coast.
