Mauritius is ringed by an almost continuous coral reef, and that single fact shapes every beach on the island. The reef breaks the ocean swell offshore and leaves a warm, shallow, turquoise lagoon around most of the coast, which is why the swimming here is so reliably gentle. The sand is soft and white, shaded by casuarina trees, and by law the beaches are public, so the long stretches in front of the grandest resorts are open to everyone.
The honest read is that the coasts differ more by wind and mood than by water quality. The north around Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie is lively, developed and sheltered, the east at Belle Mare is long, calm and elegant, the west at Flic en Flac and Tamarin catches the best sunsets, and the wild south around Le Morne and Gris Gris is the most dramatic. The trade winds blow from the southeast, so on a windy day you move to a leeward coast rather than abandon the beach. Pick for the setting and the conditions, because the lagoon delivers almost everywhere.
Ranked, not listed
Scored on the sand, the water, the crowd and how easy the day is. Honest verdicts, the overrated called out.
Le Morne
The island's signature beach, a long arc of white sand and a luminous lagoon beneath the basalt monolith of Le Morne Brabant. The setting is unmatched, the water calm inside the reef, and the wind makes it a world capital for kitesurfing. Public, beautiful and backed by some of the finest resorts on the island.
Trou aux Biches
Widely rated the best swimming beach in Mauritius, a long sheltered strip of soft sand and a shallow calm lagoon that shelves gently for ages. The snorkelling is good, the sunsets face west, and the shade is generous. A reliable, gorgeous all rounder that suits families and couples alike.
Belle Mare
The east coast at its best, a very long ribbon of white sand and clear calm water backed by casuarinas and a few grand resorts. It is elegant, uncrowded for its size and superb for an early walk. The morning light here is some of the prettiest on the island.
Flic en Flac
One of the longest beaches in Mauritius, a broad sweep of sand with a calm lagoon, easy facilities and a famous west coast sunset. It is lively without being overrun, with good snorkelling near the reef and plenty of shade. The west coast pick for a full, easy beach day.
Mont Choisy
A graceful curve of soft sand between Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie, shaded by a deep belt of casuarina trees and lapped by calm water. It is popular with locals at weekends and relaxed midweek, with space to spread out. A lovely, unfussy northern beach.
Blue Bay
A marine park as much as a beach, with the most vivid water on the island and coral just offshore that you can snorkel straight from the sand. The lagoon glows an improbable blue, and glass bottom boats run over the reef. The swim and the snorkel are the draw rather than long stretches of sand.
Ile aux Cerfs
A picture book island off the east coast, reached by boat and ringed by pale sand and a brilliant lagoon. It is the classic Mauritian day trip, beautiful but busy, with watersports and a party feel at the main beach. Walk to the quieter far shore for the better version.
Pereybere
A compact, friendly public beach near Grand Baie with calm clear water and an easy, sociable feel. Cafes and shops sit right behind the sand, which makes it a convenient swim in the busy north. Small but reliably pleasant.
Tamarin
A wilder west coast bay where a river meets the sea, known for surf, dolphins offshore and a laid back village mood. The swimming is less protected than the lagoon beaches, but the sunsets and the surf scene give it real character. The pick for a different, more rugged day.
Who it suits, who should skip
If you want the single most beautiful beach day, go to Le Morne for the setting and Trou aux Biches for the swim. Le Morne pairs a calm lagoon with the drama of the mountain behind it, while Trou aux Biches is the gentle, shallow, shaded stretch that most people picture when they imagine the perfect family beach. Between them they cover the spectrum from photogenic to practical.
Use the wind to plan your day rather than fight it. The trade winds blow from the southeast, so when the east coast at Belle Mare is breezy, the north and west at Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy and Flic en Flac are sheltered and calm, and the reverse holds on a rare northwesterly. Because every beach is public and free, moving coast is easy and costs nothing, which is one of the quiet pleasures of the island.
The honest caveat is that Ile aux Cerfs is both genuinely lovely and genuinely overrun. The main beach on the island day trip gets crowded and loud with watersports, and the boat tours can feel like a conveyor belt. It is still worth doing, but walk away from the landing point to the quieter shore, or temper expectations, and you will enjoy it far more.
The best months in Mauritius
Mauritius is a year round beach island, but it sits in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are flipped. The cooler, drier winter from May to November brings the most comfortable weather, lower humidity and calmer water on the sheltered coasts, and it is the prime time for a relaxed beach holiday. The warm summer from December to April is hotter and more humid, with the lagoons at their warmest and the chance of a passing tropical shower or, rarely, a cyclone between January and March. The kitesurf season at Le Morne peaks with the winter trade winds from around June to September, while the calmest swimming and snorkelling on the east coast favours the shoulder months. Whichever month you choose, there is almost always a sheltered coast somewhere on the island.
Where to book a daybed
Mauritius is not a beach club island in the Mediterranean sense, and it is fairer to say so than to pretend otherwise. The luxury here lives inside the resorts, each with its own beach bar and pool, which are private to guests. There is no long public strip of competing daybed clubs, because the model is the all inclusive resort rather than the open beach scene.
The one genuine public beach club is C Beach Club at Bel Ombre on the south coast, and it is excellent. It is open to visitors as well as resort guests, with day beds, a large pool, a Mediterranean menu and watersports, and it sells a day pass that runs through the day. If a stylish daybed and a long lunch are part of your plan, this is where to find them. For the detail and the booking notes, see our Mauritius beach clubs guide.

Before you go
Which is the best beach in Mauritius?
Le Morne in the southwest has the most beautiful setting, a calm turquoise lagoon beneath a basalt peak, while Trou aux Biches in the north is the best for gentle, shallow swimming. Belle Mare on the east coast is the pick for long, calm, elegant sand.
Are beaches in Mauritius public?
Yes, by law all beaches in Mauritius are public, including the long stretches in front of the grandest resorts. You can walk and swim anywhere, and you pay only for sunbeds, watersports or access to a private beach club such as C Beach Club.
When is the best time to visit Mauritius for the beach?
The cooler, drier winter from May to November is the most comfortable, with calmer water on the sheltered coasts. The warm summer from December to April is hotter and more humid, with a small cyclone risk between January and March. There is almost always a sheltered coast.
Does Mauritius have beach clubs?
Mostly the luxury sits in private resort beach bars rather than public clubs. The one standout public beach club is C Beach Club at Bel Ombre on the south coast, open to visitors with day beds, a pool and a day pass. See our Mauritius beach clubs guide.
Is the water calm for swimming in Mauritius?
Generally yes, because a coral reef rings most of the island and creates a warm, shallow, protected lagoon. The sheltered north, east and west coasts are especially gentle, while wilder spots such as Tamarin and Gris Gris are more exposed. Conditions vary with the wind.
Which Mauritius beach is best for snorkelling?
Blue Bay in the southeast is a marine park with vivid coral just off the sand, the best easy snorkelling on the island. Trou aux Biches and Flic en Flac also have good reef snorkelling near shore. Marine life and visibility are never guaranteed.
