Mauritius has quietly become one of the better value bases in the Indian Ocean for a working stay, and the reason is practical rather than romantic. The island offers a long stay Premium Travel Visa that lets remote workers settle for up to a year, the towns have reliable fibre and 4G, and a calm reef lagoon is never far from a desk. The catch is the one most beach lists skip: you cannot really work on a tropical beach, between the glare, the heat and the wind, so the right question is which beach town gives you a comfortable apartment, fast wifi and a good cafe within reach of water worth swimming in.
We have ranked these for the working stay rather than the holiday: how strong the town behind the beach is for apartments, cafes, supermarkets and connectivity, and how good the swim is when the laptop closes. The order favours the west and north, where the expat infrastructure is real and the long stay rentals are easiest, over the prettier but more seasonal resort coasts. Confirm the wifi on any specific apartment before you commit, since speeds vary building to building and are to be confirmed for any rental.
Beach bases for nomads in Mauritius
Scored on the town behind the beach for wifi, apartments and cafes, and the swim when work is done.
Tamarin
The established west coast base for expats, surfers and long stayers, with cafes, coworking spots and easy apartments around Tamarin and Black River. The river beach is calm and there is a real surf scene, the sunsets are excellent, and you have a working community already in place. The best balance of life and lagoon.
Pereybere
A friendly town beach beside lively Grand Baie, the busiest hub on the island for restaurants, supermarkets, coworking and nightlife, with the widest choice of long stay rentals. The swim is calm and clear right off the town. The pick if you want amenities and company over quiet.
Flic en Flac
A long west coast beach town with supermarkets, plenty of apartments at fair prices and a famous sunset, more spread out and lower key than Grand Baie. Good value for a longer stay, with a calm lagoon and snorkelling near the reef. Confirm the apartment connection before booking.
Trou aux Biches
The gentlest swimming beach on the island and a calmer northern base than Grand Baie, with shops and eateries nearby and resorts and rentals along the sand. Quieter for evenings and ideal if the daily swim matters more than the scene. Cafes are fewer, so plan to work from the apartment.
Belle Mare
A long, elegant and very calm east coast beach, beautiful for an early swim and an after work walk, but a more seasonal, resort led stretch with fewer year round cafes and shops. A peaceful base for a focused stretch if you have a car and do not need a town at the door. The trade winds make it breezier.
Blue Bay
Near Mahebourg and the airport, with vivid water and the island's best shore snorkelling, set beside a real working town that keeps costs and local life close. The southeast is quieter and cheaper than the north, suited to a nomad who wants the everyday island over the resort gloss. Check the rental wifi first.
Who it suits, who should skip
If you want to live well and still work, base on the west or north and let the beach come second. Tamarin and Black River give you an existing expat and surf community with cafes and coworking, Grand Baie and Pereybere give you the fullest set of amenities and the easiest rentals, and Flic en Flac offers the same at better value for a longer stay. The Premium Travel Visa makes a stay of several months or more straightforward, though the current terms and eligibility are to be confirmed with the authorities before you rely on them.
Plan around the trade winds, which blow from the southeast, so the east coast at Belle Mare is often breezy while the north and west stay sheltered and calm. And do not romanticise basing yourself at the most beautiful, remote beach. The quiet east coast stretches and the wild south are glorious for a day off, but they have fewer cafes, shops and rentals, so they make a frustrating place to work. The honest truth is that the best working base is rarely the prettiest beach, it is the town with the infrastructure and the lagoon a short walk away.
Where to mark the week's end
A working week away earns a proper finish, and Mauritius keeps that simple. The island is not a beach club destination in the Mediterranean sense, but it has one genuine public beach club, C Beach Club at Bel Ombre on the south coast, with day beds, a pool and a day pass that is open to visitors. It is the easy way to close a working week with a long lunch and an afternoon on a served beach.
We never invent a price or an opening status, so the current day pass and any minimum spend are to be confirmed. Tell us your dates and we will pass the enquiry to the club so they can confirm space and cost before you go.

Before you go
Which Mauritius beach town is best for digital nomads?
Tamarin and the Black River area on the west coast are the easiest base, with an established expat and surfer community, cafes, coworking and a calm river beach. Grand Baie and Pereybere in the north have the most amenities and rentals, while Flic en Flac is better value for a longer stay.
Can you work remotely in Mauritius long term?
Yes. Mauritius offers a long stay Premium Travel Visa that allows remote workers to stay for up to a year, subject to conditions. The exact eligibility and current terms are to be confirmed with the authorities, so check the official requirements before you plan around it.
Is the wifi good enough to work from in Mauritius?
In the towns, generally yes, with apartment fibre and good 4G coverage around Grand Baie, Tamarin, Flic en Flac and the main centres, though actual speeds vary by building and are to be confirmed for any rental. On the beach itself, treat connectivity and glare as a problem and work from the apartment or a cafe.
Can you actually work from the beach in Mauritius?
Not well. Glare, heat, sand and the southeast trade winds make a tropical beach a poor office. The realistic model is to base in a beach town, work from your apartment or a shaded cafe with reliable wifi, and keep the lagoon as the reward at the end of the day.
Where should nomads avoid basing in Mauritius?
Avoid building a working stay around the remote, beautiful east coast stretches and the wild south. They are wonderful for a day off but have fewer cafes, shops and long stay rentals, so they are a frustrating base. Choose a town on the west or north with real infrastructure instead.
When is the best time for a working stay in Mauritius?
The cool, dry winter from May to November is the most comfortable for a longer stay, with lower humidity and calm sheltered lagoons. The shoulder months of April, May, September and October are the sweet spots, with warm water, low rain and lighter crowds and rents than the festive peak.
