Bain Boeuf is a small, easygoing beach near the northern tip of the island, between the fishing village of Cap Malheureux and the lively town of Pereybere. Its great asset is the view: looking out from the pale sand you see Coin de Mire, the distinctive wedge shaped islet that rises from the sea offshore, with the smaller islands beyond. Backed by a line of shady casuarina trees, it is a relaxed, local feeling beach rather than a polished resort showpiece.
The water is the other draw. The lagoon here is calm and shallow, with gentle entry over sand, which makes it reassuring for families and easy for a long unhurried swim. It is the kind of place where children can paddle while parents sit in the shade of the trees, and where the snorkelling over the shallows is mild and undemanding. The mood is unfussy and friendly, especially at the weekend when local families come out in force.
It suits families, swimmers and anyone who wants a calm beach with a memorable island view within easy reach of Grand Baie. It is less suited to those after a buzzing beach club with loungers and music on the sand, or visitors who want a long empty stretch to themselves, because it is compact and can be busy on weekends. Come on a weekday for the calmest version of it.
Bring a towel or mat, sun protection and water, because facilities on the sand are limited to shade, informal parking and the odd weekend snack vendor. There is no beach club on the beach itself, but Grand Baie and Pereybere are minutes away for restaurants, bars and table service. For daybeds and a club setting with confirmed minimum spend, use the Mauritius beach clubs directory.

Free and shaded by casuarinas, a calm shallow lagoon with a clear view of Coin de Mire offshore.
Bain Boeuf lies on the north coast of Mauritius in the Riviere du Rempart district, between Cap Malheureux and Pereybere, around an hour and a quarter from the main airport in the south and only a few minutes from Grand Baie. There is informal parking under the casuarina trees behind the beach.
A hire car or taxi is the simplest way in, and it pairs easily with the red roofed church at Cap Malheureux nearby. Bring sun protection, water and a mat for the shade, arrive early at the weekend for a parking spot, and keep an eye on children in the shallow lagoon.
