Mauritius is a year round beach island, but it sits well south of the equator, so the seasons are the reverse of Europe. The cool, dry winter runs from May to November and brings the most comfortable weather, lower humidity and calm water on the sheltered coasts, while the warm summer from December to April is hotter and more humid, with the warmest lagoons and the small risk of a tropical system between January and March.

The honest read is that there is almost always a good beach day to be had, because the reef and the shape of the island mean a sheltered coast is usually within a short drive. Timing is less about avoiding bad weather and more about matching the month to what you want, whether that is the calmest swimming, the strongest kite wind or the quietest sand away from the holiday peaks.

Month notes

The months that matter

April is one of the finest months to visit. The summer heat and humidity have eased, the rain has dropped away, and the lagoons are still warm from the long hot season, so the swimming is gentle and the sand is far quieter than over the festive peak. It is the classic shoulder month, with the best of both seasons and few of the drawbacks.

May opens the cool, dry winter, the long comfortable stretch that many regulars consider the real Mauritian beach season. Days are mild and sunny, humidity is low, the rain stays away on most days, and the sheltered north and west lagoons are calm and inviting. Crowds are light before the European summer arrives, which makes it excellent value.

July and August are the coolest, windiest months, and that is exactly why kitesurfers and windsurfers love them. The winter trade winds are at their most reliable, so Le Morne is at its best, while the European summer fills the resorts and pushes prices and crowds up. Pack a light layer for breezy evenings, and expect a fresh rather than tropical feel.

September is arguably the best all round month on the island. The strong winter winds begin to settle, the air warms, the water is comfortable, the rain is minimal, and the peak summer crowds have gone home. It is the sweet spot for travellers who want warm calm swimming, reliable sun and room on the sand all at once.

October and November carry that sweet spot forward, with warming water, dry settled weather and lagoons that turn glassy on calm days. It is a lovely window for snorkelling and easy swimming before the festive crowds and the building humidity of December arrive. Book ahead for late November as rates start to climb toward the peak.

December to February is the warm, humid summer, hottest in the water and the most festive, but also the wettest, and it carries a small risk of a tropical storm or cyclone between January and March. The lagoons are at their warmest and the island is green and lush, so it suits travellers who do not mind heat, the odd downpour and a livelier, busier scene over the holidays.

Where to book a daybed

All Mauritius beach clubs

Mauritius is not a beach club island in the Mediterranean sense, so the timing of a daybed day matters less than on the islands where clubs run a short summer season. The luxury here lives inside the resorts year round, each with its own beach bar and pool, open whatever the month.

The one genuine public beach club is C Beach Club at Bel Ombre on the south coast, open to visitors as well as resort guests across the year, with day beds, a pool, a Mediterranean menu and a day pass. It is the easy way to add a polished daybed day to any month of a trip. For the detail and the booking notes, see our Mauritius beach clubs guide.

Good questions

Before you go

When is the best time to visit Mauritius for the beach?

The cool, dry winter from May to November is the most comfortable, with lower humidity and calm water on the sheltered coasts. April, May, September and October are the sweet spots, with warm lagoons, low rain and lighter crowds before and after the European summer peak.

Does Mauritius have a rainy season?

Yes. The warm summer from December to April is the wetter, more humid season, with February usually the wettest month. Showers are often short and tropical, and the east and the highlands catch more rain than the sheltered north and west. The winter from May to November is markedly drier.

Is there a cyclone season in Mauritius?

There is a small risk of tropical storms and cyclones during the warm summer, mainly between January and March. Direct hits are uncommon, but they can bring heavy rain and wind. The cool, dry winter from May to November carries no real cyclone risk.

When is the sea warmest in Mauritius?

The lagoons are warmest during the summer from December to April, typically around 28C, and coolest in the winter from July to August, typically around 24C. The reef keeps the water comfortable for swimming all year on the sheltered coasts.

When is the best time to kitesurf in Mauritius?

The winter from June to September brings the strongest, steadiest trade winds, which is the prime kitesurf and windsurf season at Le Morne in the southwest. The wind eases through spring, so the shoulder months suit calmer watersports such as snorkelling and paddleboarding.

When is Mauritius least crowded?

The quietest months are the shoulder periods around April, May, late September and October, between the festive peak and the European summer. Prices are lower and the sand is emptier, while the weather is often at its most comfortable, which makes these the best value windows.
