Bagni Lido

Alassio was built on a material, and the material is its sand: fine, naturally white, rich in iodine, running in a single four kilometre curve to the fishing village of Laigueglia. The English who wintered here in the mid 1800s prized it as a cure before anyone sold it as a pleasure. Bagni Lido works this sand from the Passeggiata Ciccione, and its defining design decision is restraint. There are five rows of umbrellas and no more, crossed by two walkways that carry you to the waterline, and on a coast where a bagno will happily stack canopies ten deep, a five row plan means the sea stays visible from every position and the beach reads as a lightly drawn grid rather than a roof of fabric.

The second rarity here is transparency. The Lido prints its full seasonal tariff, row by row, so the whole economy of the beach can be read before you leave home, from a 30 Euro back row day in June to the 70 Euro front line of August. Read the tariff as architecture and the Lido makes sense. The row is the unit of design, each priced by its distance from the water, and because there are only five of them the whole plan stays legible: you know exactly what 20 extra Euro buys, which is the front line and the uninterrupted horizon. The visual language is old Riviera, umbrella after umbrella in ordered file against white sand, and it photographs beautifully in the morning before the town wakes, when the walkways run empty to the sea and the grid throws long shadows.

The photographs also lie a little, as beach photographs do. The empty postcard version of this shore is a May or September image; an August afternoon at Alassio is five full rows, a busy waterline and the hum of one of Liguria’s most visited sand towns, and no bagno can design its way out of that arithmetic. Visitor reviews over the years have called the Lido one of the friendlier value picks on this stretch, with clean facilities a recurring compliment and service that can run brisk in peak weeks the recurring gripe. What it does not offer is equally clear: no daybed theatre, no DJ, no published kitchen, just a shaded rest zone, play corners for the children and free Wi Fi under the canopies.

The details worth respecting are the small printed rules. The position is sized for two adults and two children, and every extra head is 5 Euro a day, honestly stated rather than sprung at the desk. Cabins exist but flow first to the front three rows, so the full comfort package points you toward the more expensive sand. None of this is hidden, which on the Riviera counts as a design feature in itself.

Alassio sits on the coastal rail line between Genoa and Ventimiglia, and from the station the seafront is a short walk down through town, which matters because summer parking here is the usual Riviera hunt. The bagno stands at Passeggiata Ciccione 19, directly on the promenade.
