Nik Beach Club

Varigotti is the village the western Riviera puts on its postcards, a run of Saracen houses in faded ochre and rose standing directly on the sand, and any beach club operating here starts with scenery it could never build. What the Pace family, who run Bagni Nik, actually added is negative space. Their stated design rule is umbrellas five metres apart, straw canopies over oversized padded loungers, each position completed by a director’s chair, and on a coast where most stabilimenti pack three rows into that distance, the gaps are the architecture. The eye reads the beach as composed rather than filled.

Everything else is deliberately small scale: a bar working from morning to evening, a lunch kitchen with a two and a half hour window, cabins and hot showers, a stack of canoes for nosing along the cliffs. Our Liguria club directory lists Nik as the calm counterweight to the glossier Bagni Fiore at Paraggi, and the comparison holds: one sells proximity to Portofino, this sells distance from everything.

The five metre rule deserves to be taken seriously as design. Beach clubs usually monetise every square metre they hold, so a family choosing to hold fewer positions at wider spacing is making a real economic sacrifice for a visual and acoustic one: fewer neighbours in your peripheral vision, conversations that stay private, photographs in which the umbrella line reads as rhythm instead of clutter. The material palette helps. Straw and timber against Varigotti’s warm plaster looks like it grew there, where the moulded white plastic of lesser bagni never does.

The honest limits are physical. This is a working stretch of the Via Aurelia coast, so the state road runs close behind the beach, and the cove, while sheltered and clear, is a village beach rather than a wilderness: in August the free sand beside the concessions fills to the towel’s edge, and the contrast between the packed public strip and Nik’s spaced rows becomes the whole argument for paying. The kitchen’s 12:30 to 15:00 window is short by club standards, deliberate for a family operation, and it means the long lazy four o’clock lunch does not exist here. Guests rate the cooking well, 4.3 from a couple of hundred Google reviews at our check, with the shrimp pasta and tuna steak the plates that keep being named.

On price, we can only report the structure: booking runs through an online calendar where the rate for your date appears when you select it, and nothing is posted as a public tariff. The village beach is only half of Varigotti’s case. By car, leave the A10 at Finale Ligure and follow the coast for about ten minutes to Varigotti, parking along the shore road. By rail, Finale Ligure is the station, with a bus or taxi covering the last ten to fifteen minutes. Staying in Varigotti itself is the elegant answer, since the club sits under five minutes on foot from the village centre. The family answers on the phone and on WhatsApp, and the booking calendar on their site shows availability by date, which in August is a genuine advantage over turning up hopeful at ten.
