Every love story on this beach starts with the one the owners tell about themselves. Bagni La Giara opened on 15 May 1964 as the small beach of the hotel of the same name, run for 32 years by Serafino Bardini, sold out of the family in 1996, and bought back in October 2007 by his granddaughter and her husband, himself the son of longtime beach regulars. That is who greets you at Piazzetta Libeccio 1 today, and it explains the place entirely: nothing here is designed, it is inherited, from the two rows of umbrellas to the stone cabins set into the village itself.

Within our Liguria club directory, La Giara is the intimate one. Bagni Fiore in Paraggi holds the glamour title and Nik Beach Club, a few hundred metres along this same shore, does the easygoing scenic day. La Giara wins on space and quiet: an online listing counts just 36 umbrellas across the whole concession, set four metres apart in three staggered rows, which on the packed Riviera di Ponente amounts to a small act of rebellion.

The spacing is the whole argument. Where neighbouring concessions pack the sand until conversations overlap, La Giara leaves enough room between umbrellas that a September 2023 guest made a point of it, noting you can drag the lounger around your own patch to follow the shade all day. The same review caught the house character in one detail we love: two days of bad weather were quietly left off the bill. The owners work the beach themselves, guests greet them by name, and an espresso still costs 1.50 euro, a price a June 2026 visitor called the stuff of local dreams.

For two people this is the most naturally romantic sand in Varigotti. The village behind the beach is the postcard one, pastel houses rising straight from the shore, and the aperitivo service means the day ends with cold glasses at the lounger rather than a queue at a bar. Book a stone cabin if one is free: they are relics of the old borgo, cool and private, and they turn a beach day into something closer to a tiny seaside apartment. With the July listing showing the bagno open to 22:00, you can hold your spot through dusk while the crowd thins, which is the hour this beach does its best work.

The shortcomings are the flip side of the charm. Nothing about pricing is published anywhere, so budgeting means booking through the widget or calling, and with 36 umbrellas the maths of high season is unforgiving: arrive without a reservation in August and you will likely be turned away with a smile. There is no pool, no DJ, no show. Varigotti’s sand runs golden and fine by Ligurian standards, backed by one of the few true seafront villages left on this coast. Swimmers can push along the shore toward Punta Crena, and the celebrated Baia dei Saraceni waits one headland east for a wilder swim. By car, leave the A10 at Spotorno and follow the Aurelia about ten minutes to Varigotti, then park wherever the village allows and walk in, because Piazzetta Libeccio sits inside the old lanes. By rail, Finale Ligure station is roughly 4.5 km away with local buses onward to Varigotti and connections from Savona, and honestly the bus beats circling for a space in August.
