Playa Porto Mari is the beach I send people to when they want the reef more than the scene, and it happens to be one of the most quietly romantic corners of Curacao as well. It is a soft pale crescent on the low key west coast near Sint Willibrordus, with two old wooden piers reaching into water that shades from milk green in the shallows to deep blue over the reef. Like most of the good Curacao beaches it is managed, so you pay a small fee per person at the booth and pay again for a lounger, and in return you get raked sand, showers, a dive shop and a beach bar rather than a raw public strip.
The reason to come is under the surface. Porto Mari has a genuine double reef, two coral ridges that run parallel to the shore with a sandy lane between them, so you fin out over the first reef, cross the channel and reach the second on a calm day. It is some of the easiest reef access on the island, straight off the sand rather than by boat, and on a glassy morning the visibility is lovely. Bring your own mask if you can, get in early, and float rather than stand so a careless kick never breaks the coral. There is no surf here and there never will be, because Curacao sits on the sheltered leeward side of the trade winds, so the water is calm and easy to read almost every morning.
Two things surprise first timers, and it is kinder to say them plainly. The last stretch of road in is unpaved and a little rough, so drive it slowly rather than fast. And the feral pigs are real. They wander down from the surrounding land and sometimes stroll the sand looking for scraps, along with the resident iguanas, so keep your distance, do not feed them and mind your food and bags. Neither is a reason to skip Porto Mari. They are simply part of its wild, slightly ramshackle charm.
Plan the day around the wind and the light. Snorkel the reef first thing while the bay is glass, take the middle of the day under a palapa with a drink from the bar, and stay on for the evening if you can. Porto Mari faces roughly west, the piers frame the horizon, and the sunset here is among the best on Curacao, which makes it a fine spot to end a slow day two by two rather than in a crowd.

The bar and kitchen behind the sand is the easy social heart of the beach, good for a cold drink, a snack or a lunch without leaving your spot, and it often stays open toward the evening for the sunset. Porto Mari sits on the west coast near Sint Willibrordus, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by car from Willemstad. There is no reliable public transport to the gate, so most visitors drive a rental car or take a taxi or a tour. The last stretch is an unpaved side road that runs down to the entrance booth, where the fee is collected, so take it slowly rather than fast.
Bring cash for the gate and the loungers, water, and your own snorkel gear if you have it, since rentals are limited and pricier on site. The beach has shade, showers, a dive shop and a bar, so you can travel light, but the sun is strong all day and there is little natural cover away from the palapas. Aim to arrive early for the calm reef water and the pick of the shade, and stay for the sunset.
