Playa Kenepa Chiki, better known as Kleine Knip, is one of those small coves that photographs far bigger than it is. It is a short crescent of fine white sand between low cliffs on the wild northwest coast, with clear turquoise water and a reef close enough to swim to. For snorkelers and for anyone who values a striking natural beach over sunbeds and cocktails, it is one of the best value spots on the island, because the best thing about it, the water, is completely free.
The honest catch is that this is a wild beach, not a serviced one. There are no toilets, no showers and no shops, just some shade palapas, a few picnic tables and bins. That is exactly why it stays beautiful, but it means you have to come prepared. Bring your own water, snacks, sunscreen and shade if the palapas are taken, and pack out your rubbish. The unpaved car park beside the sand is free, but it fills on a sunny weekend, so early arrival is the difference between an easy day and a hunt for a space.
Use the cove the way the snorkelers do. Head to the left side near the rocks where the reef and the fish are, keep an eye out for turtles, and treat the quick drop off with respect since there is no lifeguard. If you want a bigger beach with a little more room, Grote Knip is minutes up the road, and for a full club scene with loungers and food you are better off at Jan Thiel or Mambo Beach on the south coast. Come to Kleine Knip for the snorkeling and the quiet, and it rarely disappoints.
No club, and that keeps it wild
Kleine Knip has no beach club, no bar and no loungers for hire beyond the odd rental. For a value traveller that is the appeal, not a drawback.
If you want daybeds, cocktails and a DJ, this is the wrong beach, and that is a good thing. The absence of any club is exactly what keeps Kleine Knip clear, quiet and free, with the reef doing the entertaining instead of a sound system. The trade is that you bring your own comfort, a towel, some shade and a cool bag, rather than buying it. When you do want the full club scene with loungers, food and service, it lives on the south coast at Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach, a completely different kind of day. Split your trip between the two and you get the best of both, the wild snorkeling cove by day and the serviced beach when you feel like being looked after.
On the wild northwest coast
Playa Kenepa Chiki sits on the rugged northwest coast of Curacao, about an hour by car from Willemstad along the main road toward Westpunt. There is no useful public transport out here, so a rental car or a scooter is the practical way to come, and the free unpaved car park is right beside the sand. Signs point to Kleine Knip and the larger Grote Knip nearby.
Because there are no shops or toilets, pack everything you need, including water, food, reef safe sunscreen and shade, and bring your own snorkel gear if you have it, though a set can sometimes be rented on the beach.
