Grote Knip, or Kenepa Grandi in Papiamentu, is the beach the Curacao postcards are usually shot at, and for once the postcard is honest. A wide bowl of pale sand sits inside a ring of green rock, the water inside runs a bright clear turquoise, and unlike so many Caribbean showpieces you do not have to book a resort or pay a gate to reach it. It is free, it is public, and there is a big car park right above the sand. For a traveller who resents paying for a view, that combination is the whole appeal.
What you should not expect is polish. This is a natural beach with simple stalls, rented chairs and a snack bar rather than a designed club, and there is little natural shade, so you either rent an umbrella or bake. It can also get busy, especially at weekends and on Dutch holidays when island families arrive with coolers and music, and the small car park fills. Come then and the postcard has a crowd in it. Come on a weekday morning and you may share the bay with only a handful of snorkelers.
Play it simple. Swim in the calm shallow centre with the children, then work along the rocky right hand edge with a mask where the fish and the occasional green turtle gather. Between swims, a smoothie or a plate from the snack bar and a rented lounger under an umbrella is all the structure the day needs. The cliffs at the far end draw jumpers, but heights and depths vary and there is no supervision, so we would leave that to the locals and keep the day about the water and the snorkeling, which is where Grote Knip is genuinely excellent.

A rental car is the simple way there, since public transport is limited on this end of the island, and the road is straightforward with a large free car park just above the beach.
Bring cash for the chair hire and snack stalls, pack water, an umbrella and snorkel gear, and arrive on a weekday morning to beat the local crowds. Keep children close in the water and use the ramp and handrail if you need easier access from the car park. Pair it with the smaller Kleine Knip next door for a quieter swim.
