The verdict

  • Top pickKendwa on the north tip for the island real party beach and its famous full moon nights, with Nungwi next door for the densest cluster of bars.

Zanzibar photographs like a dream of the Indian Ocean, flour white sand, water in three shades of turquoise and the lateen sails of wooden dhows leaning across the horizon. Unlike many beaches this lovely, it backs that picture with a real nightlife, though the energy is split between two very different ends of the island.

The north tip is the scene. Kendwa is the island party beach, a broad white strand unaffected by the big tidal retreat that empties other shores, famous for its full moon nights and sunset bars. Nungwi, just around the headland, packs the densest run of restaurants, bars and dive shops, a livelier and more built up village energy than anywhere else on the coast.

The southeast tells a different story. Paje and Jambiani are flat, shallow and wind blown, the heart of Zanzibar kitesurf culture, and their nightlife is barefoot and young, beach bars in the sand and a sundowner crowd rather than clubs. The east and northeast coasts, Matemwe and Michamvi among them, lean quiet and resort led, where the evening is a hotel dinner and a famous sunset.

We have ranked the beaches below by how much of a scene each genuinely delivers, weighing the look of the place against the night within reach. Each entry links to its full guide for access, tides and the honest read on crowds, and remember that operators and opening status change every season.

Ranked by the scene, day and night

Six of the best party beaches in Zanzibar

Loudest in the north, barefoot in the southeast.

01
North tip

Kendwa

The island true party beach, a wide stretch of brilliant white sand on the northwest tip that stays swimmable through the tides when other beaches empty. It is known for sunset bars and full moon parties, and it photographs as the postcard Zanzibar with real evening energy layered on top, the best single base for a lively stay.

02
North tip

Nungwi

The most built up village on the coast and the densest cluster of bars, restaurants and dive shops, just around the headland from Kendwa. The sand is beautiful and the scene is busy and social, a place that trades some of the island serenity for genuine choice after dark.

03
Southeast coast

Paje

The capital of Zanzibar kitesurf culture, a long flat beach with shallow turquoise water and a young, barefoot crowd that fills the beach bars at sundown. The look is wide open sky and racing kites, and the night is relaxed and sandy rather than a club, the liveliest scene outside the north.

04
Southeast coast

Jambiani

A quieter, prettier neighbour to Paje, a fishing village strung along pale sand where seaweed farmers work the shallows at low tide. It has a gentle bar scene and a soulful, slow energy, beautiful to photograph and easy in the evening, more village charm than party.

05
Northeast coast

Matemwe

A long, calm northeast beach famous for the view across to Mnemba atoll and some of the island best snorkelling, lined with quiet lodges. It is serene rather than lively, included as the gorgeous counterpoint where the evening is a lodge dinner under the stars.

06
Michamvi peninsula

Michamvi

A peninsula known for its west facing sunset spots, where a famous bar perched over the water draws people for the golden hour before the calm returns. The beaches are tranquil and resort led, so the formula is a beautiful day and a single celebrated sundowner rather than a night out.

The honest read

Two islands in one

The honest read on Zanzibar is that it carries two distinct kinds of night and they sit at opposite ends of the island. The north, around Kendwa and Nungwi, is the actual scene, with sunset bars, full moon parties and the densest run of places to eat and drink. If a real evening matters, this is where you base, and Kendwa has the rare advantage of a beach that stays swimmable through the big tidal swings.

The southeast is the other energy, younger, barefoot and shaped by the kite scene at Paje and Jambiani, where the night is a beach bar in the sand and a sundowner crowd rather than a club. The east and northeast coasts, Matemwe and Michamvi, are the quiet luxury, gorgeous beaches where the evening is a lodge dinner and a celebrated sunset. Pick your coast by the night you actually want.

Timing matters here. The long dry season from around June to October and the short dry spell around December to February bring the best beach weather and the liveliest crowds, while the long rains around March to May quieten everything. Tides are dramatic on many beaches, so check the guide for each. Operators and opening status change with the season, so we keep the live list on the directory and uncertain details say to be confirmed.

The club layer

Beach bars and a base for the day

See Zanzibar beach clubs

Zanzibar lively beaches lean on village bars and sunset spots more than formal clubs, with Kendwa and Nungwi in the north holding the most reliable cluster and Paje carrying the kite town crowd in the southeast. Many of the east coast beaches are quiet and resort led with little service on the public sand. Operators, opening status and any minimum spend shift with the season and the tides, so we keep the live list on the directory. Tell us your dates and the kind of day you want and we pass the enquiry on to confirm what is open.

Good questions

Before you go

Does Zanzibar have party beaches?

Yes, more than most Indian Ocean islands. The north tip around Kendwa and Nungwi is the real scene, with sunset bars and famous full moon parties, while Paje in the southeast carries a younger, barefoot kite crowd. Much of the east coast stays calm and resort led, so choose your end of the island by the night you want.

Where is the best nightlife in Zanzibar?

The northwest tip is the clear hub, with Kendwa known for its full moon nights and Nungwi holding the densest run of bars and restaurants. Paje in the southeast is the liveliest spot outside the north, built around the kitesurf scene. The rest of the coast is quieter and resort focused.

Is Zanzibar good for a party holiday?

It can be, especially if you base in the north around Kendwa or Nungwi, which combine genuinely beautiful beaches with a real evening scene. The southeast offers a younger, sandier energy through the kite towns. It is livelier than most of the Indian Ocean, though still gentler than a dedicated party island.

When is the liveliest time in Zanzibar?

The long dry season from around June to October and the short dry spell from December to February bring the best weather and the busiest, liveliest beaches, especially in the north. The long rains around March to May are quietest. Time a trip for the dry months if the night matters.

Which Zanzibar beaches are near the nightlife?

Kendwa and Nungwi on the north tip are nearest the action, steps from sunset bars and the island busiest village, while Paje and Jambiani in the southeast carry the kite scene. The east coast beaches are calm and resort led. Operators and opening status change each season, so we keep the live list on the directory and uncertain details say to be confirmed.
