Zanzibar is warm all year, but the rain and the wind swing enough to make timing matter. The island runs on two wet seasons and two dry ones, layered over the same trade winds that drive its kitesurfing. Get the calendar right and you land dry days, warm sea and the activity you came for. Get it wrong and you can hit the long rains, when some east coast places quietly close.
The long dry season runs from June to October, driven by the southeast Kusi wind. It is the most reliable stretch for the beach, with sunny days, lower humidity and the peak kite season folded in. December to February is the other warm, mostly dry window, hotter and more humid, with the festive crowds and the gentler Kaskazi kite wind. These are the two periods we steer most beach travellers toward.
The rains split into two. The long rains from roughly mid March to May are the heaviest, the low season, and the weeks when a beach holiday is the biggest gamble. The short rains around November are far lighter, often just afternoon showers, and rarely ruin a trip. Below, every month is broken down so you can match your dates to the beach you want.
Month by month at a glance
| Month | Air | Sea | Rain | Crowd | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 33C | 29C | Low | Peak | Hot, humid and festive, mostly dry with gentle Kaskazi kite wind. |
| February | 33C | 29C | Low | Busy | The hottest month, dry and sunny, steady wind for learner kiters. |
| March | 33C | 29C | Moderate | Steady | Warm and humid as the long rains begin to build late in the month. |
| April | 31C | 29C | Heavy | Quiet | The wettest month and low season, with some east coast closures. |
| May | 30C | 28C | Heavy | Quiet | Long rains continue early on, then ease toward a dry June. |
| June | 29C | 27C | Low | Busy | Dry season opens, cooler and breezy, the Kusi kite wind arrives. |
| July | 28C | 26C | Low | Peak | Dry, sunny and busy, strong Kusi wind for advanced kiters. |
| August | 28C | 26C | Low | Peak | Peak dry season, full hotels and the strongest kite wind. |
| September | 29C | 26C | Low | Busy | Still dry and breezy, slightly quieter as the season eases. |
| October | 30C | 27C | Low | Steady | The last of the long dry season, warm and often beautifully clear. |
| November | 31C | 28C | Moderate | Steady | Short rains bring afternoon showers that rarely spoil a beach day. |
| December | 32C | 29C | Low | Peak | Warm, festive and mostly dry, the Kaskazi kite season begins. |
When each month earns its place
April and May. These are the months to avoid for a beach holiday. The long rains are at their heaviest, humidity is high and some east coast hotels and restaurants close for the season. Prices drop and the island is green and quiet, which appeals to some, but the weather is the year's least reliable by a wide margin.
June to August. The core of the long dry season and the safest beach window. Days are sunny and a touch cooler, humidity falls and the southeast Kusi wind powers the peak kite season at Paje and Jambiani. July and August are busy and priced for it, with the strongest wind for advanced riders, so book ahead.
October. A quietly excellent month. The long dry season is still in place, the air is warm and the sea often beautifully clear, but the peak crowds have thinned. It sits before the short rains arrive, which makes it one of the best value windows of the year for the beach.
December to February. The warm festive window, hotter and more humid than the dry season but mostly free of heavy rain. The gentler northeast Kaskazi wind makes this the friendlier kite season for learners. Expect peak prices and crowds over the holidays, easing into a sunny, busy February.

Before you go
What is the best month to visit Zanzibar?
June to October is the safest beach window, the long dry season with sunny days and lower humidity. December to February is the other warm, mostly dry option. October in particular blends good weather with thinner crowds and better value.
When are the rains in Zanzibar?
There are two wet seasons. The long rains from mid March to May are the heaviest and the low season, the weeks to avoid. The short rains around November are far lighter, usually just afternoon showers, and rarely ruin a beach trip.
When is the best kitesurfing wind?
Two seasons. The southeast Kusi from June to October is the stronger window, peaking in July and August for advanced riders. The northeast Kaskazi from December to March is lighter and steadier, which suits learners. Between them the wind is unreliable.
Is the sea warm all year in Zanzibar?
Yes. The Indian Ocean here stays around 26 to 29 degrees every month, so swimming is always comfortable. It is coolest during the dry season around July and August and warmest in the humid festive months, but never cold.
Should I avoid April and May?
For a beach holiday, generally yes. The long rains are heaviest then, humidity is high and some east coast businesses close. If you want green landscapes, low prices and quiet, it can appeal, but the weather is the least reliable of the year.
