Twiga

Twiga has anchored the glamour end of the Versilia shore since 2001, and at Viale Roma 2 in Marina di Pietrasanta it now stacks three businesses on one stretch of sand. By day it is a beach of private canopied tents and a pool, open 10.00 to 20.00 through the season. At lunch and dinner the kitchen belongs to Vesta, a Mediterranean seafood restaurant serving crudo, sushi and grilled fish. After half past midnight the club takes over, four nights a week, with a sound that leans afro and deep house.

Run the reported ladder from bottom to top and a strange truth appears. A simple lounger from around 50 euros is the entry ticket. An isolated bed is 100 to 150. A standard tent lands at 300 to 600, and the flagship tent, which holds up to ten people, peaks near 1,500 in August. Divide that headline number by a full tent of friends and you are at 150 euros each, the price of one prime bed, for the best real estate on the property with lunch delivered to your canopy. Twiga read as a group buy is almost rational. Twiga read as a solo lounger rental is the most expensive way on this coast to lie on sand that every neighbouring bagno also fronts.

The kitchen deserves its own decision. Vesta runs the food here, lunch every day from 12.30 and dinner on Tuesday and from Thursday to Sunday, built on raw seafood plates, sushi and fish over the grill, with reported full meals in the 80 to 150 euro range per person before serious wine. That is destination restaurant money, and the room and the plates play at that level, which is exactly why a value traveller should treat it as the event of the trip rather than the default lunch between swims. The club is the third economy: doors at 00.30 four nights a week, international names behind the decks, entry reported from 50 euros with a drink, tables far beyond.

Where does it fall short of the billing? Book the reported bed rate and you have bought furniture, not a day, because food and drink stack on top of it and August availability evaporates around the weekends. The gap between the beach closing at 20.00 and the club opening at 00.30 also surprises people who imagined one seamless day into night, since dinner is the only bridge and it books separately. Come midweek in June or September and the frictions relax at once, along with, by most accounts, the prices.

The sand under the tents is ordinary Versilia gold, fine and pale with a gradient so gentle you wade a long way before swimming, and it runs unbroken past dozens of bagni in both directions. That is the value traveller’s lever: the sea in front of a modest family establishment a short walk along Viale Roma is the same sea, at a fraction of the rate, and truly free sand is scarce on this managed shore either way. The address is Viale Roma 2, on the beach boulevard right where Marina di Pietrasanta meets the edge of Forte dei Marmi. Drivers come in on the old Aurelia coast road, and the nearest station is Forte dei Marmi Pietrasanta on the coastal line, a short taxi from the sand. In August the boulevard crawls from late morning, so aim to be settled by eleven or arrive in the evening when the beach traffic has drained away and the dinner crowd takes over.
