The verdict

Best for. Travellers who want a softer, pine backed Versilia with a famous club scene, the green Versiliana park for shade and culture, and the art town of Pietrasanta for the evening.

Best spot. Take a bagno by the pines for the day, catch a show at the Versiliana festival under the trees, then dine in the marble town of Pietrasanta inland.

Know this. The beach is mostly paid bagni and the water is calm rather than clear, so the pinewood, the culture and the food are the draw, not dramatic sea.

The honest read

Marina di Pietrasanta is the gentler, greener face of Versilia, and that is its quiet appeal. Rather than one resort centre it is a string of small seaside hamlets, Tonfano, Fiumetto, Motrone and Focette among them, laid along a long sandy beach with the bagni in front and, crucially, the pinewood behind. That belt of umbrella pines softens the whole stretch, giving shade and a wilder edge that the open sand of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio cannot match, and it shelters the Versiliana, the historic park that gives this coast its cultural heart.

The Versiliana is the reason a culture wanderer lingers here. A pinewood and villa estate long tied to the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, it hosts a celebrated summer festival of theatre, music and conversation under the trees, so an evening here can mean a play or a concert in the cool of the pines rather than just another seafront stroll. The marina also carries Versilia's famous beach club scene, with the well known Twiga among the clubs along this sand, so the nights can be as lively as the days are languid. Status, programmes and opening hours change each season and are to be confirmed before you travel.

The honest read is the same Versilia caveat. The beach is soft and easy and the pinewood lifts it, but most of the sand is paid bagno and the water is calm and plain rather than clear, so this is not the place for a dramatic swim. The masterstroke is to look inland. Pietrasanta itself, a few kilometres back from the marina, is one of the loveliest small towns in Tuscany, a centre of marble sculpture where artists keep studios around a handsome piazza. Spend the day on the sand and the evening in the art town over good Tuscan cooking, and the marina rewards you far beyond the sea.

Getting there and essentials

Versilia, Tuscany coast

Marina di Pietrasanta lies in the heart of Versilia between Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio, in the province of Lucca, around half an hour from Pisa and its airport by car. The nearest stations are Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi Seravezza Querceta, both a short ride from the sand, with the art town of Pietrasanta a few kilometres inland.

In summer the seafront and the clubs fill and parking is tight, so arrive early or come by train and bicycle. The beach, the Versiliana park and the marina restaurants sit within an easy flat walk, and Pietrasanta town is a short hop inland for the evening.

Common questions about Marina di Pietrasanta

Is Marina di Pietrasanta worth visiting?

Yes, for a more relaxed and pine fringed slice of Versilia. Marina di Pietrasanta strings together small seaside hamlets such as Tonfano, Fiumetto and Focette, with bagni along the sand, the green Versiliana park behind and a famous club scene. The water is calm and ordinary like the rest of Versilia, but the pinewood, the culture and the art town of Pietrasanta inland make it a rewarding base.

What is the beach like at Marina di Pietrasanta?

A long, wide strip of soft golden sand backed in places by pinewood, shelving gently into calm shallow water, divided mostly into private bagni with free stretches between them. It is family friendly and easy rather than dramatic, the water calm and not especially clear. The green backdrop and the relaxed hamlets give it a softer feel than the busier resort centres nearby.

What is the Versiliana park?

The Versiliana is a historic pinewood and villa estate just behind the beach at Marina di Pietrasanta, long associated with the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio and other artists. Today it is a green park that hosts a noted summer festival of theatre, music and talks under the pines. It gives this stretch of coast a cultural and shaded dimension that the open Versilia sand lacks.

Where should you eat near Marina di Pietrasanta?

On a bagno terrace for fresh fish by the sand, or inland in the lovely art town of Pietrasanta, whose piazza and trattorias make the best evening on this coast. Pietrasanta is a centre of marble sculpture with studios and galleries, so a dinner there pairs good Tuscan cooking with art. The Versilia staples of seafood, focaccia and fritto misto are everywhere along the marina.

When is the best time to visit Marina di Pietrasanta?

June and September for warm, calm water and lighter crowds than the Italian peak of August, when the bagni and the clubs fill and prices climb. The Versiliana festival animates the summer evenings under the pines, while spring and autumn suit the art town and the food more than the swim. Book ahead in high season for the popular clubs and tables.
