In 1933 a couple named Sebastiano and Siria took a bathing concession on the unbuilt southern edge of Forte dei Marmi, by the pine woods of the Versiliana, and began serving the villa families who summered behind the dunes. Three generations of the same family later, the operation they founded is one of the oldest bagni in town, and its early cabins, little wooden huts roofed in terracotta tile, still stand and still get used. Luchino Visconti and Gabriele D’Annunzio passed through in earlier eras; the industrial dynasties of Milan and Turin kept their tents here for decades.

Versilia’s beachfront now trades loudly in celebrity names and nightclub economics, and Piero’s refusal to join is its entire strategy. The luxury here is institutional memory: staff who know which tent your family has taken since the 1960s, initials painted on cabins for the regulars, wooden pattini pulled up on the sand for anyone who wants to pedal out past the swimmers. Eighteen lifeguards along one concession’s waterline is a staffing level most resorts never approach, and it tells you where the house spends its money: on the guests already there rather than on attracting new ones.

The 2023 addition proved the point rather than breaking it. Bastia, the beach restaurant named for founder Sebastiano, cooks fish beside the seawater pool with real ambition, serving every morning and midday but opening for dinner only on weekend nights. The pool itself, filled from the sea, doubles as the club’s event space for private parties and ceremonies. It is modernisation done the Piero way: one considered move a decade, nothing that would startle a guest returning after twenty years.

The honest difficulty is access. Nothing has a published price, August belongs to families who rebook the same positions annually, and a first time visitor can find the whole apparatus opaque in a way the party clubs, whatever their faults, are not. That is not snobbery so much as a queue you were not born into. Come in June or September, ask plainly for what is free that week, and the house is warmer than its reputation for discretion suggests.

The shore itself is the Versilia signature: a wide, dead flat ribbon of fine golden sand where the water deepens so gradually that you wade a long way before swimming, with the marble streaked Apuan Alps standing straight up behind the town. Piero’s stretch sits at the quieter Versiliana end, away from the pier and the shopping grid, with the pine park a short walk inland. The address is Viale della Repubblica 101, on the seafront avenue at the southern end of Forte dei Marmi near the Versiliana park, roughly ten minutes by bicycle from the town centre. Bikes are the local currency: the town is flat, distances are short, and arriving on two wheels marks you as someone who understands the place. Drivers will find the beach road parking tight through July and August.
