White Beach Club

The Costa Smeralda was invented as an aesthetic project, and most of its beach venues have spent the decades since escalating: more marble, more logos, more velvet in improbable places. White Beach Club went the other way and stayed there. Founded in the early 1980s between the thick juniper scrub and the open arc of Liscia Ruja, it still works with two materials, timber and white cloth, and one view, the pale water of the Cala di Volpe bay. Nothing about it photographs loudly, which on this coast is itself a statement.

The structure is entirely wooden, set a few tens of metres back from the shoreline concession so the beach itself stays open sand, and it has weathered into the greens and greys of the maquis around it. The white is where the discipline shows: cushions, cloth, umbrellas, all one unbroken tone against pale sand and that improbable water, so the whole composition works like a photograph already colour graded. The terrace, added in 2014, is the one modern gesture, a dining platform aimed across water the club itself calls one of the most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean, and for once the marketing is understatement. Time of day matters here: the water off Liscia Ruja is at its most theatrical in high sun, so book lunch rather than dinner and let the afternoon stretch.

The kitchen is Sardinian without a concept attached. Fried squid, octopus salad with potatoes, carpaccio of the day’s catch with citrus, then Sardinian gnocchi, spaghetti with clams or linguine with lobster, grilled fish for the table, a plain cutlet or burger for children, and myrtle liqueur when the plates are cleared. The bar keeps to cold classics rather than mixology theatre. The crowd is quieter money than the Porto Cervo marina scene: families off yachts, couples on the loungers, nobody performing for a camera. By 20:00 it is over; there is no evening program, no DJ arc, no bottle parade, and the club clearly prefers it that way.

Where it falls short is transparency and arithmetic. No rate for a lounger, an umbrella or a table is published anywhere, and on this coast that silence usually means figures that would make a mainland lido blush, so ask on WhatsApp before you drive out rather than negotiate on hot sand. August also tests the serenity: the free beach around the concession fills densely, the parking behind the dunes overflows by late morning, and the calm the club sells is then only truly present on its own furniture. In June or September the same white geometry sits in a nearly empty bay, and the value question answers itself.

Where most Costa Smeralda beaches are pockets between granite headlands, Liscia Ruja is a long, generous arc with water so shallow that children wade far out before it matters, which is why our Liscia Ruja beach guide rates it among the best family sand on the coast. The length is the crowd valve: a five minute walk from the central path usually finds open sand even in July. The coves of Capriccioli sit just up the coast when you want granite and turquoise in a smaller frame.

The club sits on the central stretch of Liscia Ruja, reached by the minor road that leaves the coast route near Cala di Volpe, south of Porto Cervo, with parking areas behind the beach and a short walk to the sand. There is no useful public transport, and in July and August the parking is finished by late morning, so arrive early or come the elegant way: the club arranges a taxi boat on request, which turns the commute into the best part of the day.

Booking runs through people rather than software. The club posts WhatsApp numbers for the beach side and the restaurant and an email address, and that is the entire machinery; nothing can be reserved online. It works, but it means questions about rates, minimum spend and front row positions are a conversation.
