Santorini has a long, warm season and a short, quiet winter, so the real question is less about whether it will be sunny and more about heat, wind, crowds and the temperature of the sea. The island bakes in high summer and fills with day trippers from the cruise ships, while the shoulder months on either side offer warm water, softer heat and far more room to breathe.

This guide walks the year month by month, with a quick grid for the headline conditions and longer notes on the months that matter most. We have been honest about the trade offs, because the hottest, busiest weeks are not the most pleasant, and the warm, quieter shoulder offers some of the best beach and caldera days of the year without the crush.

If you want the short answer, late May to June and September to early October are the sweet spot, with warm sea, kinder heat and lighter crowds. July and August deliver reliable sun but also the strongest meltemi wind, the heaviest crowds and the top prices, while the winter is quiet and cool with many beach businesses closed. Below is the fuller picture so you can match the month to the trip you want.

The notable months

When each month earns its place

May. A lovely time to come, with warm, settled days, an island green from the spring, and a sea that is finally warming enough for a comfortable swim by the end of the month. The crowds are light compared to summer, prices are gentler, and the heat is kind for walking the caldera as well as lying on the beach. One of the most rewarding shoulder months of the year.

June. A strong contender for the best month overall. The sea has warmed to a pleasant temperature, the sun is reliably strong, and the worst of the meltemi wind and the cruise ship crush has not yet arrived. It is busy and building, but there is still room to breathe, making it a smart choice for warm swimming without the full peak intensity.

July. High summer arrives in force, hot and dry and very busy, and this is when the meltemi, the dry north wind, often blows hardest. It stirs up the open beaches and can make the exposed coast choppy and dusty, so the sheltered southwest beaches come into their own. Book accommodation and dinner tables well ahead, and expect crowds at the famous caldera viewpoints.

August. The hottest, busiest and most expensive weeks of the year, with the warmest sea but the least space and the strongest summer wind. It can be a wonderful time if you embrace the buzz, but the heat is intense, the beaches and viewpoints are packed, and everything needs booking ahead. If you can be flexible, the shoulder months on either side are far more comfortable.

September. Many regulars call this the best month on Santorini. The sea is at its warmest after the long summer, the fierce heat softens, the meltemi eases, and the crowds begin to thin as the children go back to school. It blends warm swimming, kinder weather and a more relaxed island, which is a hard combination to beat for a beach and caldera trip.

October. The warm tail of the season, mild and pleasant in the first half with a sea that holds its summer warmth and a calmer, quieter island. The light is beautiful and the crowds are much reduced, though the weather grows more changeable later in the month as the first autumn rains appear and some beach businesses begin to wind down for the year.

Good questions

Before you go

What is the best month to visit Santorini?

Late May to June and September to early October are the sweet spot. The sea is warm, the heat is kinder than the peak, the meltemi wind is gentler and the crowds are lighter. Many regulars rate September the best of all, with the warmest sea of the year and a more relaxed island as the summer crush eases.

When is the sea warmest for swimming in Santorini?

The sea is warmest in August and September, around 25 degrees, after the long summer has heated it through. June and July are also comfortably warm for swimming. By contrast, spring is slow to warm, with the water still cool through April and only really pleasant from late May, so early season trips are better for walking than swimming.

Is the meltemi wind a problem in Santorini?

It can be in high summer. The meltemi, a dry north wind, blows hardest in July and August and can make the open southeast beaches choppy and dusty. The sheltered southwest beaches near Akrotiri stay calmer when it is up. It rarely spoils a trip, but it is worth picking your beach by the wind on the windiest days.

When is Santorini least crowded?

The quietest months are from November to March, but many beach businesses close and the sea is cold, so it is not a beach season. For warm weather with fewer people, the shoulder months of May, early June and late September into October offer the best balance, with pleasant conditions and far more room than the July and August peak.

Is it worth visiting Santorini in winter?

Winter is quiet, cool and atmospheric, good for caldera views, walking and a calm break, but it is not a beach trip. Expect cool days, the occasional storm, a cold sea and many restaurants, beach businesses and some hotels closed. If you want sun and swimming, aim for the shoulder months or summer instead.
