The best beaches for families in Santorini

Shallow black sand, organised bays and the honest truth about which famous beaches to skip with kids.

The verdict

Santorini is not the obvious family beach island, and it pays to know that before you go. The famous side of the island, the caldera at Fira and Oia, is a wall of cliffs with no real beaches at all, so the swimming happens on the far coast where the volcano left long stretches of dark grey and black sand. Those beaches are wide, organised and easy, but the sand can get genuinely hot underfoot in summer, so water shoes earn their place.

We have ranked the beaches below for the things that matter with children. Shallow and gentle water, rows of sunbeds and umbrellas, food within a short walk, a promenade or playground, and parking that does not turn the day into a battle. The southeast coast around Perissa and Perivolos and the calmer northeast bay at Monolithos do this best, while a couple of the most photographed beaches are better admired than swum with a toddler in tow.

If you take one line from this page, take this one. Base your family days on Monolithos and Kamari for shallow, organised, easy swimming, treat Red Beach as a photo stop rather than a swim, and pack water shoes because the black sand holds the heat.

Ranked for families

The family beaches worth your day

Shallow water and easy services first, scenery second.

01
Northeast coast

Monolithos

The clearest family choice on the island. A long, shallow, gently shelving bay near the airport with soft dark sand, organised sunbeds, tavernas and a children's playground behind the beach. The water stays shallow a long way out, parking is easy and it is the least scene driven of the main beaches, so a day with young children needs almost no planning.

02
Southeast coast

Kamari

A long, fully organised black sand and pebble beach backed by a paved promenade of tavernas, shops and a dive centre. The water deepens a little more quickly than at Monolithos, but the sheer depth of services, the flat promenade for buggies and the easy bus link make it a dependable family base under the Mesa Vouno headland.

03
Southeast coast

Perivolos

The long, smart continuation of Perissa, with deep rows of sunbeds, beach bars and watersports. It leans more stylish than child focused, but the sand is soft, the services are excellent and the far end stays calmer, so families who want a polished day with food and shade close by are well looked after here.

04
Southeast coast

Perissa

A huge organised black sand beach with sunbeds, tavernas and a relaxed feel below the Mesa Vouno rock. Be aware that the seabed can shelve quite quickly close to shore, so it suits confident young swimmers and watchful parents more than paddling toddlers. The choice of food and the long promenade keep older children happy all day.

05
Akrotiri, southwest

Caldera Beach

A small, sheltered and shallow bay near Akrotiri, calmer and quieter than the big southeast beaches and protected from the wind. It is low key with a taverna or two rather than a full resort strip, which makes it a gentle, undramatic spot for a swim with little ones away from the crowds.

The honest read

The honest read for families

The black sand is the thing nobody warns you about. It is beautiful and it makes for easy, soft underfoot walking, but in the full summer sun it becomes hot enough to hurt bare feet, so water shoes or flip flops are not optional with children. Claim a sunbed with shade, because there is little natural cover on these open beaches and the midday heat is real.

Be honest with yourself about Red Beach. It is the island's most photographed cove, framed by rust coloured cliffs, and it is genuinely striking, but it is small, it gets very crowded, the access path is rough, and there have been ongoing rockfall warnings on the cliffs above. We treat it as a photo stop you walk to and admire, not a place to spread out for a family swimming day, and we steer families to the open organised beaches instead.

The southeast and northeast coasts solve most of the problems. Monolithos and Kamari give you shallow water, sunbeds, shade, food and flat ground for buggies, while Perissa and Perivolos add scale and watersports for older children. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, there are no lifeguards to rely on as a rule, and the afternoon wind can pick up, so keep children close and let the sea state, not the photos, choose your beach.

The club layer

A base for the family day

Browse Santorini beach clubs

A beach club or an organised stretch makes a family day far easier on Santorini, with sunbeds, umbrellas, a place to leave your things and food without a long walk back to the road. Perivolos and Perissa carry the most beach bars and clubs, while Kamari and Monolithos lean toward simpler tavernas and family services. Some of the smarter clubs on the southeast coast are more adult and stylish than child friendly, so it is worth checking. We never invent a venue, a minimum spend or an opening status, so anything we cannot confirm is marked to be confirmed. Browse the directory and send one enquiry to check your date.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Santorini beaches are best for families with young children?

Monolithos on the northeast coast near the airport is the clearest family choice, with shallow, gently shelving water, soft dark sand, a playground and easy parking. Kamari is the next best for its long organised promenade, tavernas and dive centre. Both sit away from the cliff side, where there are no real swimming beaches at all.

Is the black sand a problem for children in Santorini?

It can be. The volcanic sand is soft and easy to walk on, but in high summer it gets hot enough to burn bare feet, so water shoes or flip flops are essential. There is also little natural shade on the open beaches, so secure a sunbed with an umbrella early and keep water and hats close through the middle of the day.

Should we take young children to Red Beach in Santorini?

We suggest treating Red Beach as a short walk and a photo rather than a family swimming day. It is small and crowded, the access path is rough, and there have been ongoing rockfall warnings on the cliffs above. The big organised beaches at Monolithos, Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are far better suited to a relaxed day with children.

Do Santorini family beaches have sunbeds and tavernas?

Yes. Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are fully organised, with deep rows of sunbeds and umbrellas and a long line of tavernas and bars right behind the sand. Monolithos has sunbeds, tavernas and a playground. Prices vary and some of the smarter beach clubs can be costly, which we mark as to be confirmed, but you will not be short of shade or food.

Is the water calm and shallow on the family beaches in Santorini?

Monolithos and Caldera Beach near Akrotiri are the shallowest and calmest, shelving gently for a long way out. Kamari and Perissa can deepen more quickly close to shore, so they suit confident swimmers and watchful parents. The afternoon wind can raise a chop on the open southeast coast, so morning swims are usually the calmest for little ones.
