Mykonos is a summer island, and its beach season is shaped less by temperature than by two things, the crowds and the meltemi wind. The season runs from roughly May to October, the sun is reliable throughout, and the real questions are how warm the sea is, how hard the wind is blowing and how many people are sharing the sand. Get those right and the island is glorious.
This guide walks the season month by month, with a quick grid for the headline conditions and longer notes on the months that matter most. We have been honest about the trade offs, because the warmest, liveliest weeks of July and August are also the windiest, busiest and priciest, while the shoulder months trade a touch of cooler sea for far more breathing room.
If you want the short answer, June and September are the sweet spots, with warm water, a gentler meltemi and thinner crowds than the August peak. May is quiet and fresh but the sea is still cool, and October winds down as venues start to close. Below is the fuller picture so you can match the month to the trip you want.
Month by month at a glance
| Month | Air | Sea | Rain | Crowd | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Cool, windy | Cold, around 16C | Wettest | Closed feel | Deep off season; most beach venues shut |
| February | Cool, windy | Cold, around 15C | Wet | Very quiet | Out of season; not a beach month |
| March | Mild, breezy | Cool, around 16C | Some | Very quiet | Spring stirring, but too cool for the beach |
| April | Mild, fresh | Cool, around 17C | Occasional | Quiet, opening | Island waking up; pleasant but sea still cold |
| May | Warm, fresh | Cool, around 19C | Low | Quiet, building | Lovely and quiet; sea cool but venues opening |
| June | Warm, sunny | Warming, around 22C | Low | Lively, not peak | A sweet spot; warm sea, gentler wind, fewer crowds |
| July | Hot, dry | Warm, around 24C | Very low | Very busy | Peak heat and strong meltemi; busy and pricey |
| August | Hot, dry | Warm, around 25C | Very low | Peak | Hottest, windiest and busiest; book well ahead |
| September | Warm, sunny | Warm, around 24C | Low | Busy, easing | The other sweet spot; warm sea, easing wind and crowds |
| October | Mild, cooling | Cooling, around 22C | Rising | Quiet, winding down | Pleasant early then closing; venues shut late month |
| November | Cool, windy | Cooling, around 20C | Wet | Closed feel | Season over; the island goes quiet |
| December | Cool, windy | Cold, around 18C | Wettest | Very quiet | Deep off season; not a beach month |
When each month earns its place
May. The island wakes up, with warm, fresh air, long sunny days and a lovely sense of quiet before the season fills. The catch is the sea, which is still cool at around 19 degrees after the winter, so swimming is bracing rather than warm. Many beach clubs and restaurants open through the month, so it is a fine time for a calm, uncrowded visit if the cooler water does not put you off.
June. One of the two sweet spots of the year. The sea has warmed to a comfortable swimming temperature, the days are hot and reliably sunny, and the meltemi is usually gentler than it becomes in midsummer. Crowds are lively without the August crush, and prices have not peaked, so June offers the best balance of warm water, calmer wind and space on the sand.
July. High summer arrives with hot, dry days and a buzzing island, but also with the meltemi at full strength, which can blow hard for days at a time and churn up the exposed north coast. Crowds and prices climb steeply. It is a brilliant month for energy and nightlife, but for calm swimming you will be chasing the sheltered south coast bays.
August. The peak of everything, the hottest, busiest and most expensive month, and usually the windiest as the meltemi reaches its strongest. Beaches, restaurants and roads are full, and accommodation needs booking well ahead. The atmosphere is electric and the sea its warmest, but anyone after calm water or a quiet beach should plan carefully or look to the shoulder months instead.
September. The other sweet spot, and many regulars favourite month. The sea is at its warmest after a summer of heating, the fierce meltemi usually begins to ease, and the July and August crowds thin while the island stays lively. Prices soften and beach days feel relaxed rather than frantic, which makes September a superb time to visit before the season winds down.
October. The season tails off. Early October can still be warm and pleasant with a swimmable sea, but the weather grows more unsettled as the month goes on and many beach clubs, restaurants and hotels close for the winter from mid to late October. It suits travellers who want a quiet, fresh end of season visit and do not mind that much of the island is shutting down.

What is the best month to visit Mykonos?
June and September are the sweet spots, with warm sea, a gentler meltemi wind and thinner crowds than the July and August peak. September often has the warmest water of all after a summer of heating. July and August are hottest and liveliest but also windiest, busiest and priciest, so the shoulder months give the best balance.
When is the meltemi wind strongest in Mykonos?
The meltemi, a dry north wind, is strongest in July and August, when it can blow hard for days at a time and churn up the exposed north coast beaches. It usually eases through September. The wind is the single biggest factor in a Mykonos beach day, so on windy dates head for the sheltered south coast bays.
When is the sea warm enough to swim in Mykonos?
The sea is comfortably warm for swimming from around June to October, peaking near 24 to 25 degrees in August and September. In May it is still cool at about 19 degrees after the winter, so swimming is bracing. Outside the May to October season the water is cold and most beach venues are closed.
When is Mykonos most crowded and expensive?
July and August are the peak, with full beaches, busy roads and the highest prices, and August is the busiest of all. For a lively island with more room and softer prices, June and September are far better, while May and October are quieter still as the season opens and closes. Book peak weeks well ahead.
Is Mykonos worth visiting outside the summer?
For the beach, not really. The beach season runs from roughly May to October, and outside it the sea is cold, the weather is windy and wet, and most beach clubs, restaurants and many hotels are closed. The island is quiet and atmospheric in winter, but if beaches and swimming are your aim, stick to the warm season.
