Kamari is Santorini in resort mode, and on its own terms it does the job well. It sits on the east coast directly below the great Mesa Vouno headland, the same mountain that backs Perissa on the other side, and the two beaches share the dark volcanic character. What sets Kamari apart is the long paved promenade behind the shore, lined with tavernas, cafes, shops and dive centres, which turns the beach into an easy all day base rather than a wild escape.
The honest note is the surface. This is pebble, not soft sand, dark and rounded and lovely to look at, but firm underfoot and quick to heat in the midday sun, so a pair of water shoes transforms the day. The water off the pebble is clear and clean, the beach is organised with sunbeds and lifeguards in season, and the seabed drops fairly soon into proper swimming depth, which makes it more a swimmers beach than a toddler paddling pool.
For atmosphere, Kamari is comfortable rather than glamorous. The promenade buzzes in the evening with families strolling, tavernas filling and the floodlit cliff rising above, and there is an open air cinema nearby that locals and visitors both rate. It is not the place for a dressed up club day, and we would steer that crowd to Perivolos, but for a relaxed resort beach with everything to hand it is one of the most convenient choices on the island.
Who it suits: families who want a safe promenade and easy food, couples after a comfortable resort base, and anyone who values convenience close to the airport.
Who should skip it: travellers chasing a wild natural beach should look to Vlychada, and those set on the polished club scene belong at Perivolos.

Kamari trades on organised sunbeds and easygoing beach bars along its promenade rather than the dressy day bed clubs found elsewhere. Kamari Beach questions
Is Kamari Beach sand or pebble?
Kamari is dark volcanic pebble and coarse grit rather than soft sand. Water shoes make the walk to the water far more comfortable, and the dark surface holds the heat, so the pebble can grow hot underfoot in the middle of a summer day.
Is Kamari or Perissa better?
They sit on opposite sides of the Mesa Vouno mountain with similar dark beaches. Kamari is the more polished resort with a long paved promenade of tavernas and shops, while Perissa feels younger and better value. Your choice comes down to resort comfort against price.
Can you swim at Kamari Beach?
Yes, Kamari is organised with sunbeds and lifeguards in season and the water is clear. The seabed shelves fairly quickly into deeper water, so it suits swimmers more than paddling toddlers, and afternoon wind can add a little chop that varies by day.
Is Kamari good for families?
It suits families who want a resort beach with a safe paved promenade, easy food and shops a step from the sand. Parents of very small children should note the pebble underfoot and the quick drop into deeper water when choosing where to paddle.
How do you get to Kamari Beach?
Kamari is on the east coast about 10 minutes by car from Fira and close to the airport, with regular buses and parking behind the promenade. The easy access and resort setting make it one of the most convenient beaches on the island.
