Platis Gialos is the workhorse of the south coast, and that is meant as a compliment. It is a long, gently curving bay of soft sand backed by a wall of hotels and tavernas, with calm shallow water that makes it one of the easiest beaches on Mykonos for families and nervous swimmers.
It does not pretend to be a hidden gem. The sand is lined end to end with sunbeds, the tavernas run right up to the beach, and in high season it is busy from morning on. What it offers instead is convenience. There are buses from town, a car park, and most importantly the pier for the taxi boats that shuttle along the coast to Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia.
That makes Platis Gialos the natural base if you want to sample the south coast without renting a car or a quad. Set up here for the easy mornings, then hop a boat to the louder beaches when you want a change of pace.
Who it suits: families with children, couples who want a reliable swim and a long lunch, and anyone using the taxi boats to explore. The shallow water and the row of kitchens behind you make for a low effort beach day.
Who should skip it: if you are after a wild, undeveloped cove or a famous club scene, this is not it. For a quieter and prettier swim, try Agios Sostis or Lia on the quieter side of the island, and for the party, ride the boat to Paradise.
Beach clubs near Platis Gialos Beach
Platis Gialos is a hotel and taverna beach rather than a club beach, and we will not dress it up as something it is not. You will find organised sunbeds and good beach restaurants, but the daybed and bottle scene is a short taxi boat ride away at Paradise, Paraga and Psarou. Platis Gialos Beach, Mykonos
Platis Gialos sits on the south coast about ten minutes by road from Mykonos town, with regular buses through the day and a car park behind the beach. The real draw is the taxi boat pier at the western end, where small boats run a loop to Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia. It is the simplest beach to reach and the simplest base for exploring the rest of the coast.
- Use the taxi boats from the pier to reach the other south coast beaches without a car.
- Come early in August if you want a sunbed near the water, as the front rows go first.
- Bring shade for children, since the beach is open and the midday sun is strong.
