Mykonos has a reputation for party beaches, and some of it is earned, but the island also has a string of calm, shallow, well organised bays that work beautifully for families. The trick is knowing which side of the island to be on. The north coast takes the full force of the meltemi, the dry summer wind, so it is choppy and exposed, while the south coast bays sit sheltered with flat, clear shallows for most of the season.

We have ranked the beaches below for the things that matter on a family day. Calm, shallow entry, organised sunbeds and shade, food within reach and easy access by road or the little boat taxis that hop along the south coast. We have also been honest about which famous names to leave off the list with small children, because a beach that fills with music and crowds by midday is no place for a toddler.

If you take one line from this page, take this one. Base your family days on the south coast around Ornos, Platis Gialos and Elia, treat the party beaches as adult outings, and keep an eye on the wind, because the meltemi decides which bay is calm on any given day.

Ranked for families

The family beaches worth your day

Calm water and easy services first, scene second.

01
South coast

Ornos

The clearest family choice on the island. A small, sheltered south coast bay with shallow, calm water, soft sand and a row of tavernas and sunbeds right behind the beach. It is close to town, easy to reach, and the little boat taxis leave from here, so a day with children needs almost no logistics.

02
South coast

Platis Gialos

A long, fully organised beach with calm, shallow water and a deep apron of sunbeds, hotels and restaurants. It is the hub for the boat taxis that link the south coast beaches, so it suits families who want services on tap and an easy way to explore other bays without driving.

03
South coast

Elia

The largest organised beach on the island, sheltered from the meltemi and backed by sunbeds, tavernas and watersports. The long stretch of sand gives families room to spread out, the water shelves gently, and a nearby water park makes it an easy choice for a full day with older children.

South coast

Kalo Livadi

A long, relaxed sandy bay in a green valley, quieter than the headline beaches and known for good tavernas on the sand. The calm, shallow water and the laid back feel suit families who want a proper beach day without the crowds and noise of the party stretches further west.

West coast

Agios Ioannis

A small, calm cove famous for sunset views toward Delos, with sheltered shallows and a couple of tavernas. It is more intimate than the big organised beaches, so it works for families with younger children who want a gentle swim and an early evening on the sand rather than a long busy day.

The honest read

The honest read for families

The wind is the thing nobody warns you about. Mykonos is one of the windiest islands in the Cyclades, and the meltemi blows hard through high summer, especially July and August. It hits the north coast beaches hardest, kicking up chop and blowing sand and umbrellas around, so the calm family days are almost always on the sheltered south coast. Check the forecast, and if the meltemi is up, head south.

Be honest with yourself about the party beaches. Paradise, Super Paradise and Paraga are famous for a reason, but that reason is music, crowds and a scene that builds through the afternoon, which is the opposite of a relaxed day with children. The water can be lovely in the morning, but these are adult outings, not family beaches, so we have left them off the ranking.

The south coast solves most of the problems. Ornos, Platis Gialos and Elia give you calm shallows, sunbeds, shade and tavernas within a few steps, and the boat taxis make it easy to move between them without driving on busy summer roads. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, and there are no lifeguards to rely on as a rule, so keep young children close and let the wind, not the photos, choose your beach.

A beach club or an organised beach makes a family day far easier, with sunbeds, shade, a place to leave your things and food without a long walk. The south coast bays such as Platis Gialos and Elia have the most services, while some of the smarter clubs lean adult and glamorous rather than child friendly. We never invent a venue, a minimum spend or an opening status, so unconfirmed details are marked to be confirmed. Browse the directory and send one enquiry to check your date.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Mykonos beaches are best for families with young children?

The sheltered south coast bays are the family choice, with Ornos the standout for its calm, shallow water and short walk to tavernas and the boat taxis. Platis Gialos, Elia and Kalo Livadi also offer gentle shallows and full services. They sit out of the worst of the meltemi wind, which makes for calmer swimming days.

Are there party beaches in Mykonos to avoid with kids?

Yes. Paradise, Super Paradise and Paraga are famous party beaches where music and crowds build through the afternoon, so they are adult outings rather than family days. The water can be calm in the morning, but the scene is not suited to young children, so we steer families to the quieter south coast bays instead.

Is the wind a problem for families in Mykonos?

It can be. The meltemi, a dry north wind, blows hard in high summer and hits the north coast beaches hardest with chop and blowing sand. The sheltered south coast bays stay much calmer, so on a windy day head south. Always check the forecast, because the wind decides which beach is comfortable on any given day.

Do Mykonos family beaches have sunbeds and tavernas?

The main south coast beaches are well organised, with rows of sunbeds, umbrellas and tavernas right behind the sand at Ornos, Platis Gialos, Elia and Kalo Livadi. Prices vary and the smarter clubs can be expensive, which we mark as to be confirmed, but you will not be short of shade, food or a place to leave your things.

How do you get between the family beaches in Mykonos?

Many of the south coast beaches are linked by small boat taxis that hop along the coast in summer, with Platis Gialos a main departure point. That makes it easy to explore bays such as Paraga, Paradise and Agrari without driving on busy roads. By car, parking near the popular beaches fills early, so arrive in good time.
