The verdict

  • Best for: Active travellers and space seekers who want a wild open shore, room to roam, the odd wave when the wind is up and nature over scene.
  • Best spot: The northern end for the seasonal bars and the easiest parking, and the empty southern two thirds for solitude and the wetland birdlife behind.
  • Know this: There is almost no shade or service, so bring water and cover, and read the forecast, this is the bay that picks up swell when the others stay flat.

Sand
Sand and pebble
Buljarica is a roughly two and a half kilometre sweep that shifts between sand and pebble along its length, the longest beach on this part of the riviera and one of the least built. Footing varies, so reef shoes earn their place.
Water
Open, can pick up swell
The bay faces open sea and is exposed to swell and wind, so it can throw up rideable waves and a real chop when a southerly runs, while the sheltered town beaches stay flat. On a still day it settles to a clear, deep blue swim.
Entry
Free and wild
Buljarica is free public shore for almost its whole length, with a small cluster of paid sunbeds by the seasonal bars at the north end. No concession owns the bay, which is a large part of its appeal.
Facilities
Minimal, north end only
A couple of seasonal beach bars and some sunbeds sit at the northern end near the access road. The rest of the bay has no shade, no loungers and no services, so come self sufficient with water, food and sun cover.
Lifeguard
None reliable
There is no reliable lifeguard cover, and the open water can run a current and a shore break when the wind is up. Swim within your depth, take care on a swell day and never swim alone. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Best months
June to September
Summer brings the warmest sea and the seasonal bars at the north end. May and October are quiet and atmospheric for a walk, and the shoulder months often hold the cleaner air and the better wind for anyone watching the swell.
The honest read

Buljarica is the wild one, and after a run of pretty managed coves it is a relief. Just over the hill south of Petrovac, it opens into a long bay, close to two and a half kilometres of sand and pebble that the developers have mostly left alone. A wetland sits behind it full of birdlife, the southern two thirds run empty, and there is just a small knot of seasonal bars at the northern end by the road. This is the Montenegro coast with the volume turned down and the horizon turned up.

For anyone who reads water this is the interesting beach on the riviera. Buljarica faces the open sea, so when a southerly blows it actually picks up swell and a shore break while Slovenska Plaza and the sheltered coves sit dead flat. It is not a dependable surf spot, more an opportunistic one, so watch the forecast, bring your own board and treat a swell day with respect because there is no lifeguard and the water can pull. When it is flat the bay turns a clear deep blue and gives you the cleanest, quietest open swim around.

The honest part is that the wildness cuts both ways. There is next to no shade, almost no service once you leave the north end, and a long hot walk to the empty south, so you come prepared or you do not enjoy it. If you want sunbeds, cafes and a calm shallow paddle for the kids, this is not your beach, the town sand at Petrovac and the sheltered horseshoe at Lucice do that far better. Come to Buljarica for space, for nature and for the chance of a wave, and it is one of the best days on the coast.

Getting there and essentials

Buljarica sits just south of Petrovac, a few minutes by car over the hill or a longer coast walk, with informal parking behind the northern end near the bars. The empty southern two thirds are reached on foot along the sand, which is exactly what keeps that end quiet. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Come self sufficient with water, food and sun cover, since shade and service stop at the north end. Watch the wind forecast if you want a wave, bring your own board, and treat a swell day with care because there is no lifeguard and the open water can run a current.

Common questions

Is Buljarica beach good for surfing?

It is the closest thing to a surf beach on this stretch. Buljarica is a long open bay exposed to swell and wind, so it can pick up rideable waves and chop when a southerly is blowing, while the sheltered town beaches stay flat. It is not a reliable break, more an opportunistic one, so read the forecast and bring your own kit.

Is Buljarica beach developed?

Barely, and that is the point. Buljarica is a roughly two and a half kilometre sweep of sand and pebble that runs almost entirely undeveloped, with a couple of seasonal beach bars at the northern end near the access road and the southern two thirds left wild, backed by a wetland.

Is there shade or facilities at Buljarica?

Very little. A few seasonal bars and some sunbeds cluster at the north end, but most of the bay has no shade, no loungers and no services, so bring water, sun cover and everything you need. That emptiness is exactly why people who want space come here.

How do you get to Buljarica?

Buljarica is just south of Petrovac, a few minutes by car over the hill or a longer coast walk. There is informal parking behind the northern end near the bars. The far south of the bay is reached on foot along the sand, which keeps it quiet.

Is Buljarica beach worth visiting?

If you want space, nature and a wilder shore, yes. Buljarica trades sunbeds and cafes for room, birdlife in the wetland behind and an open horizon. If you want service and a calm flat swim, the Petrovac town beach and the sheltered cove at Lucice suit better.
