The verdict

The Montenegro coast keeps a clear Mediterranean rhythm. The beach season runs from May to October, the sea is warmest in late summer, and the crowds peak hard in July and August before easing into a beautiful, quieter September. Outside that window many beach businesses close and the sea turns too cold for a comfortable swim.

We have laid out the year month by month below, with a quick season grid and honest notes on the months that matter most. The headline is straightforward. June and September give you warm water, long days and far more space than the height of summer, which is why they are the months we point most people toward.

If you take one line from this page, take this. Aim for June or September for the best balance of warm sea and lighter crowds, accept July and August only if you want the warmest water and do not mind the crush, and remember that the calmest swims on any day come in the morning before the breeze builds.

The notable months

When each month earns its place

May. The opening of the season and one of the loveliest months for a quiet trip. The weather is warm and settled, the days are long and the coast is green and uncrowded, though the sea is only just warming and a swim still bites. For exploring the Bay of Kotor and the old towns with the beaches to yourself, May is a gem.

June. One of the two sweet spots of the year. The sea has warmed to a pleasant swimming temperature, the days are at their longest and the crowds, while building, are nowhere near the August peak. Prices and pressure on the beaches are still reasonable, which makes June a superb all round time to come.

July. High summer, with hot dry weather, warm sea and the busiest beaches of the year. This is when the afternoon breeze is most noticeable on the open bays like Jaz, so plan calm swims for the morning. Expect peak prices and book accommodation and the riviera clubs well ahead, as the coast is at its fullest.

September. The other sweet spot and many travellers' favourite month. The sea is still warm from a summer of heat, the crowds thin noticeably after the August peak and the light turns golden. Beach businesses stay open through most of the month, making September the ideal blend of warm water and breathing room.

October. The season winds down, but early October can still surprise with warm enough water for a swim and mild, pleasant days. Crowds are light and prices fall, though rain becomes more likely as the month goes on. A fine choice for a quiet, mild coastal trip if you are relaxed about the odd wet day.

Good questions

Before you go

What is the best time to visit the Montenegro coast?

June and September are the best months overall, pairing warm sea and long days with lighter crowds than the July and August peak. The sea is warmest in August, but the beaches are busiest then. May and early October are quiet and pleasant, though the sea is cooler at each end of the season.

When is the sea warm enough for swimming?

The sea is comfortably warm for swimming from about June to September, reaching its warmest in August and into September. May and early October can be swimmable for the hardy, but the water is noticeably cooler. From late autumn to spring the sea is generally too cold for an enjoyable swim.

Which months are the most crowded and expensive?

July and August are the busiest and priciest months, when the resort beaches and the riviera clubs fill, accommodation is at a premium and the popular coves get very busy. Travel in June or September for warm water with far more room, or in May and October for quiet at the cost of a cooler sea.

Does the wind affect swimming on the Montenegro coast?

On the open Budva bays like Jaz, a thermal afternoon breeze can build through summer and put a chop on the water, even with no real swell. It rarely stops a swim, but the calmest water comes in the morning before the breeze gets up, while sheltered bays like Becici stay gentler through the day.

Is it worth visiting the Montenegro coast outside summer?

For sightseeing, the Bay of Kotor and the old towns, the shoulder months of May and October and the quiet off season are rewarding and far less crowded. For beach days and swimming, though, you really want June to September, when the sea is warm and the beach businesses are open. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
