Cala Galdana is the great horseshoe bay of the Menorca south coast, a sweep of pale sand held between pine cliffs where the turquoise water barely moves. It is the most equipped beach on this shore, which is exactly why it opens our Menorca list: sunbed and parasol hire, three restaurants set behind the sand, showers and easy step free access, all on a Blue Flag bay that families choose above almost anywhere on the island. What it is not is a single beach club with a door, a wristband and a resident DJ.

Our honest position, the same one we take on the Menorca club directory, is that on an island that keeps its wildest coves deliberately bare, Cala Galdana is the trade you make for comfort. You get a cold drink and a rented lounger within reach, in exchange for a bay that fills with families by noon. For a couple, the real beauty of the place lives in the hours on either side of that.

The scene is family first. The shallow horseshoe is safe for small children, pedalos and kayaks push off the sand, and the pine slope behind gives natural shade when the hired parasols run out. This is not a party bay: the evening entertainment is hotel shows and easy waterfront bars like the Mississippi, and the loudest sound by day is a beach vendor. By the middle of a July or August morning the sand is full, so a couple after space should either come early or think of Cala Galdana as a lunch and a swim rather than a whole day.

The right hour for two is not the midday peak. It is first light, when the bay is glassy and empty and the cliffs hold the sun, or the last of the evening once the families have gone up for dinner. El Mirador is the romantic table, perched on the low rocks at the far end of the beach by the footbridge, its terraces hanging over the water with paellas and seafood coming out of the kitchen. For the wider picture, the fifteen minute climb to the Mirador de Sa Punta lookout gives you the entire horseshoe as it turns gold.

The sunbed hire deserves an honest line, because it is the most common complaint here. The going rate visitors quote is around 19 to 20 euros for two loungers and a parasol, but the price is not posted, it drifts upward at busy hours, and the attendants can be pushy about placing you. None of that is a scandal, it is simply the trade off of a beach this equipped, and the fix is easy: confirm the number before you sit, or carry a towel and take the free sand.

Where it falls short is intimacy at peak. In high summer the middle of the day is packed and there is nothing secluded about it. The cure is on foot: twenty minutes along the Cami de Cavalls path drops you into wild Cala Mitjana, and a little further lies Macarella, both barer and quieter with no hire and no kitchen, the postcard Menorca that Cala Galdana trades away for its comforts.

Beyond the hired rows Cala Galdana is a sheltered arc almost closed to the open sea, which is what keeps the water so still and gives the resort its calm reputation. The Cami de Cavalls coast path leaves from both headlands, the river mouth at the back of the beach feeds a small marina, and boat trips run out to the caves and the neighbouring calas. Cala Galdana sits about 35 to 45 minutes from Menorca Airport by car or taxi, with parking behind the beach that fills fast in August. Public transport reaches it, but the bus needs a change at Ferreries onto the local service, so a hire car or a pre booked transfer is the easier way to arrive with a cool bag. There is no club to reserve, though the beach restaurants take table bookings in season, and El Mirador is worth holding ahead for a sunset seat over the water.
