Cova d’en Xoroi

Legend says a shipwrecked pirate named Xoroi hid in these caves for years, undetected until a winter snowfall betrayed his footprints. Whatever the truth, his hideout now holds Menorca’s most extraordinary bar: a run of balconies, staircases and grottoes threaded through the cliff face high above the sea at Cala en Porter, where the venue programs the day around the sun itself. The 2026 season opened on 2 April and runs daily, with the caves shifting character three times before the night is out.

The clever thing about the caves is that they never pretend one crowd fits all hours. In the afternoon the Cova Day ticket is the cheapest way in and the most relaxed, families wander the balconies, kids get the pirate legend from a storyteller, and from mid June to early September an all ages DJ set warms the terraces from four in the afternoon. It is sightseeing with a drink in hand, and if a cave bar sounds better to you at 60 percent capacity, this is your slot.

The Sunset Time Session is the one the island queues for. Live acts rotate through the summer terraces, pop rock covers from Shanti and Friends, rumba and disco fusion from El Linares y los Fusionados, international pop from the Wanderlust Menorca trio, a Friday rockabilly slot from the Blue Jays, and the crowd turns adult, the dress code kicks in and the west facing balconies do the thing no other venue on Menorca can: the sun sinking straight into open sea while the music plays. After dark the caves flip again into the Night Session, a proper club with DJ EY Damys among the residents and Boiler Room style club nights running to the small hours.

Now the honest part. There is no kitchen, none, the venue says so itself, so plan dinner around your ticket or the evening ends hungry. Sunset slots in July and August pack shoulder to shoulder, drinks are priced for a monopoly view, and the ticket terms are rigid: date and slot only, no swaps, no refunds, weather at your own risk. Go once, go deliberately, and it earns its legend.

The beach the caves overlook deserves its own morning. Cala en Porter is one of the south coast’s most sheltered coves, a wide wedge of golden sand between high headlands with typically calm, shallow water that suits families, and a resort village on the plateau above. The caves and the cove make a natural double bill, swim and lunch below, then climb back up for the evening ticket. The caves sit on the edge of Cala en Porter village, about a 15 minute drive from Mahon with street parking nearby and a seasonal bus link. The entrance is at street level on the clifftop and the venue is stairs and terraces all the way down from there. The house warnings are practical rather than decorative: floors can be slippery, and the whole place is smoke free with no pets admitted.

Buy tickets ahead on the venue’s own site, where each date and session is sold separately and summer sunset slots are the first to tighten. Online allocation often grows a few days before each date, so a sold out evening is worth rechecking midweek.
