Cala Galdana is the one south coast cala that grew into a resort, and for a certain kind of beach day that is a feature rather than a flaw. The setting is still striking, a broad horseshoe of golden sand wrapped by pine topped cliffs with calm, shallow, clear water, but here the cliffs hold hotels and the sand has sunbeds, pedalos and a row of restaurants behind it. If you want to drive up, hire a lounger, swim in gentle water and have lunch within reach, this is the easiest and most comfortable beach on the island.
The honest read is that you trade wildness for convenience, and whether that is worth it depends entirely on your day. For families with small children, for anyone who does not fancy a walk in to a wild cove, or for a relaxed day when you want a cold drink and a parasol rather than a picnic, Galdana is the sensible, good value choice, and the beach itself remains genuinely beautiful. For solitude and untouched scenery it is the wrong cove, and the development that makes it easy also makes it the busiest beach on the coast in peak season.
The clever way to use Galdana is as a base rather than just a beach. It is the gateway to the southwest calas, with a signposted coast path from the eastern end leading in about 15 minutes to wild Cala Mitjana and around 40 minutes to Cala Macarella. So you can have the best of both, an easy morning on the equipped sand and an afternoon walk to a free, undeveloped cove, parking once and letting your feet do the rest. That combination is the smartest value play on this stretch of coast.

Cova d'en Xoroi for the evening
For a sundown drink the famous cliff caves of Cova d'en Xoroi sit along the coast above Cala en Porter, an easy short drive for the best known sunset on the island. A special evening out rather than a beach club, with an entry or table fee that varies and is to be confirmed.
South coast cove, easy to reach
Cala Galdana lies on the south coast about 20 minutes by road from Ciutadella and within easy reach of Ferreries and the main island road, and unlike the protected calas it has road access and car parks all year, though they fill early in peak summer. Regular buses also run from Ciutadella and Ferreries in season.
Because it is a full resort, you need carry nothing, with restaurants, shops, sunbed hire and toilets all on hand, though bringing your own water and snacks still keeps the day cheaper. If you plan to walk on to Cala Mitjana or Macarella, wear proper shoes and take water, and start before the midday heat.

Can you drive and park at Cala Galdana?
Yes. Unlike the protected calas of Macarella and Turqueta, Cala Galdana has road access and car parks open all year, which is part of why it is so popular. The car parks do fill early in July and August, so arrive in the morning or visit in the shoulder months, and buses also run from Ciutadella and Ferreries in season.
Does Cala Galdana have sunbeds and restaurants?
It does. As the most developed south coast cala, it has sunbed, parasol and pedalo hire on the sand and a choice of beach restaurants, bars, shops and hotels behind it. Hire and menu prices are set locally and to be confirmed, and bringing your own water and snacks still trims the cost of the day.
