Marmaris is an easy base for a family beach holiday, as long as you pick the right bay and skip the wrong one. The honest shape of it is simple: a couple of soft sand, shallow, gently shelving bays close to town do the heavy lifting for families, while the famous boat trip islands and the quiet villages out on the peninsula, lovely as they are for adults, are awkward and sometimes plain unsuitable for small children. Get that distinction right and the rest falls into place.

The best family days sit at Icmeler, a sheltered sandy bay backed by pine mountains a short dolmus or water taxi from the centre, and at Long Beach, the longer sandy strip nearby. Both shelve gently into warm, shallow water on a calm morning, and both have sunbeds, shade, showers, cafes and watersports behind the sand, so a family can settle in for the day without hauling much. Akyaka over toward the Gulf of Gokova adds a third option with soft shallow sand, with one caveat we will come to about the afternoon wind.

We have ranked the bays that work best for families, weighing how shallow and calm the water is, how much shade and how many facilities sit behind the beach, and how easy each is to reach and spend a whole day at with children. The honest note on which spots to skip with toddlers follows the ranking, because knowing where not to take a small child is just as useful as knowing where to go.

The ranking

Best family beaches in Marmaris

Scored on shallow calm water, shade and facilities. The honest note on which spots to skip with children is below.

1
Southwest of town

Icmeler Beach

The best family beach near Marmaris, a soft sand bay that shelves gently into warm, shallow water and sits sheltered under pine mountains a short hop from the centre. Sunbeds, shade, showers, cafes and watersports line the front, so children can paddle and dig while the adults settle in, though much of the beach is venue run and a day usually means a lounger and lunch.

Near Marmaris

Long Beach

A longer sandy strip with room to spread out, sunbeds and easy facilities, which gives families space the busier central front lacks. The water shelves gently for paddling, and there is enough food and shade behind the sand for a full day, though it gets busy in peak season, so arrive early for a front row spot near the gentle shallows.

Gulf of Gokova

Akyaka Beach

Soft sand and shallow, clear water at the head of the Gulf of Gokova make Akyaka a lovely family morning, with the cool Azmak river beside it for a paddle. The one thing to plan around is the wind, which often builds in the afternoon and draws the kitesurfers, so take your shallow water swim before lunch and keep children clear of the kite launch areas.

4
Over the headland

Turunc Beach

A calm, sheltered cove with clear water and a relaxed village behind it, which suits families who do not mind a pebble entry rather than soft sand. Water shoes make the shingle easy for small feet, and the clear water is good for a gentle swim and a look at the fish, though for the easiest sandy paddle Icmeler back over the hill is the simpler choice.

5
South of Turunc

Kumlubuk Beach

A wide, quiet bay south of Turunc with calmer crowds and clear water, a relaxed family day for those happy to make the winding drive or take a boat. It is mixed sand and shingle with simpler facilities, so bring water and shade and treat it as a peaceful escape from the busier town bays rather than a fully serviced strand.

Who it suits, who should skip

For families the calm, sandy bays close to town are the safe bets, and Icmeler is the standout, a sheltered soft sand beach with warm, shallow water, sunbeds and watersports that keep older children busy. Long Beach adds a longer sandy strip and more room, Akyaka gives soft shallow sand in the morning before the wind builds, and Turunc and Kumlubuk are calmer coves for families happy with a pebble entry and a quieter day. These put gentle, shallow water, shade and food where children need them.

Some of the most photographed spots around Marmaris are wrong for small children, and it pays to know which to skip. Cleopatra Island is genuinely beautiful but it is a protected site where you are not allowed to lie on the rare sand and the day is a long boat trip, which is a hard sell with a toddler. Cennet Island is a pine peninsula of deep rock and pebble coves with no real beach, lovely for confident swimmers and snorkelers but not for paddlers. Out on the peninsula, Bozburun and Selimiye are quiet harbour villages with little proper beach, deep entries from quays and pontoons, and a long winding drive to reach. They reward adults seeking calm, not families seeking sand. There are no lifeguards on most bays and the afternoon breeze can stir exposed water, so supervise children closely, keep them in the shallows, and remember we describe typical conditions only with no safety guarantees.

Where to book a daybed

All Marmaris beach clubs

The Marmaris and Icmeler fronts run largely on beach venues, so a serviced family day usually means renting sunbeds and an umbrella from the venue that fronts your bay and ordering lunch through the afternoon. At Icmeler and Long Beach the day setups are relaxed and family friendly, with loungers in the shade, showers and easy food, which makes them simple places to settle a young family for the day.

Set charges and any minimum spend change by venue and by season, so tell us your dates, party size and which bay you fancy and we will pass your enquiry to a venue that suits families, then they can confirm availability and any minimum. See our Marmaris beach clubs guide for the full picture of who runs which front.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the best beach in Marmaris for families?

Icmeler is the standout family beach near Marmaris, a soft sand bay with shallow, gently shelving water and full facilities, backed by pine mountains a short hop from town. Long Beach gives a longer sandy strip with sunbeds, and Akyaka over toward Gokova has soft shallow sand that is lovely in the calm morning. All shelve gently and stay calm on a typical day.

Are Marmaris beaches safe for young children?

The sandy bays at Icmeler and Long Beach are shallow and gently shelving, which suits young children, though lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed and much of the front is run by beach venues. Watch the afternoon breeze, which can stir exposed water, supervise children closely and keep them in the shallows. We describe typical conditions only and make no safety guarantees.

Which Marmaris beaches should families avoid with toddlers?

The boat trip islands and quiet peninsula villages are wrong for small children. Cleopatra Island is a protected site where you cannot lie on the sand and the day is a long boat trip, Cennet Island is a deep rock and pebble cove with no sand, and Bozburun and Selimiye are harbour villages with little real beach and deep entries. For toddlers, choose the shallow sandy bays at Icmeler and Long Beach instead.

Do Marmaris family beaches have shade and facilities?

The popular bays do. Icmeler and Long Beach have sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets, cafes and watersports, with much of the front run by beach venues that rent loungers and serve food. Quieter coves like Turunc and Kumlubuk have simpler facilities, so bring water, snacks and sun protection, as the summer sun is strong through the long season.

Is the water warm and shallow enough for toddlers in Marmaris?

Yes, in the right bays. Icmeler and Long Beach shelve gently with warm, shallow water through the summer, good for paddling toddlers, and Akyaka is famously shallow in the calm morning. The sea is warmest from July to September. Mornings are usually calmest, before the afternoon breeze builds, and conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

When is the best time for a family beach holiday in Marmaris?

June and September are the sweet spots, with warm sea and long days but lighter crowds than the July and August peak, when families on school holidays fill the bays. The shoulder weeks bring gentler heat and quieter sunbeds. See our Marmaris when to go guide for the month by month detail.
