The verdict

  • Who it is for. Travellers who want a warm, calm corner of the Turkish coast with a lively resort base, and who will take a short ride or a boat to trade the busy town strip for clearer water and quiet coves.
  • The pick. Icmeler for the best all round resort bay with clearer water, with Turunc and Kumlubuk over the headland when you want a calmer cove and Cleopatra Island when you want rare golden sand.
  • The one thing to know. The Marmaris town beach is average and busy, so the good days are reached by a short dolmus ride, a winding drive or a boat. Plan how you will get there and the bay you want is well within reach.
The lay of the coast

A sheltered gulf of bays and coves

Marmaris sits at the head of a deep, sheltered bay ringed by pine clad mountains, a natural harbour that has made it one of the busiest resort towns on the Turkish coast. The water through the gulf is warm and usually calm in summer, and the scenery of green hills dropping straight to the sea is the real draw, but the beach right in front of the town is not why you come. The good swimming is spread around the gulf and over the headlands, and reaching it is half the pleasure.

The long town strip, Uzunyali, runs for kilometres past the hotels and is convenient but average, with a narrow shore and only fair water near the marina. A short ride west brings you to Icmeler, the cleaner, calmer resort bay backed by pines, and over the southern headland lie the quieter coves of Turunc and Kumlubuk, while out in the gulf the protected golden sand of Cleopatra Island and the kitesurf waters of Akyaka reward a longer trip. Each is a different kind of day, and how you travel to it matters as much as the sand once you arrive.

We rank on the bay itself, the water, the scene and the kind of day each gives, and we weigh how you reach it, because a cove that needs a boat or a winding drive is a different proposition from a beach you can walk to. We are honest about which are worth the effort and which are not, and about the trade between a lively serviced strip and a quiet patch of clear water.

Scored on the water, the scene and the day each gives, and on how rewarding it is to reach, from the easy resort bays to the boat only coves.

1
Pine backed bay with clear water at Icmeler near Marmaris
West of town

Icmeler

The cleaner, calmer resort bay a short ride west of Marmaris, a curve of sand and shingle backed by pine covered hills with notably clearer water than the town strip. Verdict: the best all round base for a Marmaris beach holiday, easy to reach by dolmus or water taxi along the bay, lively and well serviced without the average water of the centre. It fills in peak season, so claim a sunbed early.

2
Sheltered cove of clear water at Turunc south of Marmaris
South coast

Turunc

A sheltered cove of coarse sand and clear water in a steep green amphitheatre over the headland south of Marmaris, reached by a winding road or a quick boat from the marina. Verdict: the pick of the nearer coves for clearer water and a calmer village feel than the town, well worth the short trip, with loungers and tavernas behind the sand. The boat ride in is part of the day.

3
Quiet bay ringed by pine hills at Kumlubuk near Marmaris
South coast

Kumlubuk

A quieter bay beyond Turunc near the end of the road, a long curve of pebble and sand ringed by pine hills with clear, deeper water and a more peaceful feel. Verdict: the reward for going a little further, calmer and less developed than Turunc, best reached by car on the winding road or by boat. Facilities are simpler, so it suits a slow swimming day rather than a serviced one.

4
Fine golden sand and clear shallows at Cleopatra Island near Marmaris
Gokova gulf

Cleopatra Island

The protected golden sand of Sedir Island out in the Gokova gulf, famous for its fine pale grains and clear shallows, reached only by boat and guarded against visitors carrying the sand away. Verdict: a memorable day out and the rare fine sand of the area, though it is a managed site with rules and a boat trip rather than a drop in beach. Wash your feet at the edge, since you may not bring the sand onto the grass.

5
Calm blue water and a backdrop of green hills at Akyaka on the Gokova gulf
Gokova gulf

Akyaka

A laid back town on the Gokova gulf northwest of Marmaris, known for its calm blue water, a cold river meeting the sea and a steady afternoon wind that draws kitesurfers. Verdict: a wilder, more natural calm than the resort bays and the pick for watersports, but it is a drive away rather than a quick hop, so it suits a day trip or a separate base. The wind is the point here, so time your swim for the gentle morning.

Long sandy resort strip along the Marmaris bay at Uzunyali
Marmaris town

Long Beach

The long resort strip, Uzunyali, that runs for kilometres along the bay past the hotels, a convenient stretch of sand and shingle with loungers, bars and watersports the whole way. Verdict: easy and lively and right on your doorstep, but the water near the marina end is only average and the shore is narrow and busy, so it earns its place on convenience rather than quality. Walk away from the centre for the cleaner water.

The honest read

The town, the coves and the boats

Understand that the best of Marmaris is not in front of the town and the place makes sense. The long Uzunyali strip is convenient and fun, but the water near the marina is only average and the shore is narrow and crowded in summer. The honest move is to treat the town as your lively base for dinner and nightlife, and to travel a short way each day for the swim, west to Icmeler for clearer water or over the southern headland to the quieter coves.

The coast splits by effort. Icmeler is a few minutes by dolmus or water taxi and gives you the easiest clear water. Turunc and Kumlubuk lie over a winding hill road or a short boat ride and reward it with calmer, cleaner coves, Kumlubuk the quieter of the two for going a little further. Out in the Gokova gulf, Cleopatra Island is a boat only day trip to rare golden sand under protection rules, and Akyaka is a proper drive northwest to calm water and kitesurf wind, better as a day out or a separate base than a quick hop. Decide how far you want to travel before you pick your bay, because the boat trip or the drive is as much the day as the sand.

Timing follows the Aegean summer. The warm, calm, reliably sunny season runs from roughly June to September, with the sea warmest in August when the gulf is also at its busiest and priciest. June and September give you warm water with thinner crowds and gentler heat, so the shoulder weeks are the value pick if your dates are flexible. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so check the wind before a boat day, especially out on the Gokova gulf.

Getting there and essentials

Planning your days

Marmaris rewards a little planning around how you reach each bay. The nearest airport is at Dalaman, around an hour and a half by road, and from the town the beaches spread west to Icmeler, south over the headland to Turunc and Kumlubuk, and further out into the Gokova gulf. The dolmus minibuses run constantly along the bay to Icmeler and over the hill to Turunc for a small fare, a hire car gives you the freedom to reach Kumlubuk, Akyaka and the Bozburun peninsula on the winding mountain roads, and the water taxis and day boats from the marina are the easiest way to the coves and the only way to Cleopatra Island.

Pack for hot, dry days and bring water shoes for the pebble and shingle coves, plenty of water and sunscreen, and a light layer for a breezy boat ride home. Confirm any minimum spend before you settle onto a club lounger, carry a card and some cash for the smaller villages and the boat fares, and time the popular coves and Cleopatra Island for earlier in the day to beat the midday flotilla. Check the wind before a Gokova trip, since the gulf can get lively in the afternoon, and remember that conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Which is the best beach in Marmaris?

Icmeler is the best all round resort beach, a pine backed bay with clearer water than the town. Turunc and Kumlubuk are the pick of the quiet coves over the headland, Cleopatra Island has the rare fine golden sand, and Akyaka on the Gokova gulf is the choice for kitesurf and a wilder calm.

Does Marmaris have sandy beaches?

The long main strip, Uzunyali, is a sandy and shingle beach, while the protected golden sand of Cleopatra Island is the rare fine sand of the area and is reached only by boat. Many of the surrounding coves like Turunc and Kumlubuk are pebble or coarse sand, so water shoes are useful.

When is the best time to visit Marmaris beaches?

The warm, calm, reliably sunny season runs from roughly June to September, with the sea warmest and the crowds and prices highest in August. June and September are the sweet spot, with warm water, thinner crowds and gentler heat, so aim for those shoulder weeks if your dates allow.

How do I reach the quieter beaches around Marmaris?

The dolmus minibuses run along the bay to Icmeler and over the hill to Turunc, a hire car gives you the freedom to reach Kumlubuk, Akyaka and the Bozburun peninsula on winding roads, and the water taxis and day boats from the marina link the coves and Cleopatra Island by sea.

Is the Marmaris town beach any good?

It is convenient and lively but honest travellers should temper expectations. The strip near the marina is narrow and busy and the water is only average for swimming, so for clearer water head a short ride west to Icmeler or over the headland to the quieter coves.
