The verdict

Best for. Travellers chasing the most photogenic bay on Lombok with calm, swimmable water and a viewpoint that earns the climb.

Best spot. The inner curve of the western bay for the calmest swim, then Aloha Beach Club or a warung sunbed for the afternoon and Merese hill for sunset.

Know this. It photographs beautifully and largely delivers, but it fills with day tours and buggy touts by midday, so come early.

The honest read

Tanjung Aan is the beach the rest of Lombok gets measured against, and it is largely a matter of design. The bay is drawn as a wide twin horseshoe, split by a low rocky outcrop into two gentle scoops of pale sand, with the green flank of Bukit Merese closing the eastern end. The sand itself is the signature, round grained and pale in a way locals compare to peppercorns, and in the high clean light of the dry season it throws a soft glow that makes the turquoise water look almost lit from below. It is, by some distance, the most photogenic stretch on the south coast.

The honest read is that the picture mostly holds at eye level. The inner curve of the western bay is shallow, calm and clear enough for an easy swim on a typical day, which is rarer here than the brochures suggest, since several neighbouring bays look as inviting and swim far less kindly. What lets the place down is not the sand but the scene around it. By late morning the tour vans arrive, the buggy and quad touts work the lot hard, and the quiet you came for thins out. The fix is simple and it is the oldest one in the book. Come early.

Used the right way, Tanjung Aan rewards the eye more than almost anywhere on the island. Arrive soon after sunrise and the bay is yours, the light is at its most flattering and the water is at its glassiest. Swim the inner curve, take the short climb up Merese for the wide view over both bays, then settle at Aloha or a warung as the day warms and the crowd builds. Treat it as a morning beach with a long lazy afternoon tail, and it is hard to better.

Getting there and essentials

South coast, Lombok

Tanjung Aan sits on the Mandalika coast in the south, about fifteen minutes east of Kuta Lombok by scooter or car down a paved road to a parking area behind the sand. There is no public transport, so most travellers ride or drive, and a small parking fee is usually charged.

Pair the beach with the Bukit Merese viewpoint just beyond the eastern end for the wide twin bay view, and with Seger or Kuta Lombok along the same stretch of coast. Bring water and sun cover, since shade on the open sand is limited beyond the warungs.

Common questions about Tanjung Aan

Is Tanjung Aan good for swimming?

Yes, on a typical day it is one of the easier swims on the south coast. The inner curve of the bay is shallow, calm and clear, sheltered enough for a relaxed paddle, while the outer water and the channel between the two bays can be livelier. Conditions change with tide and swell and are never guaranteed, so read the water first.

Why is the sand at Tanjung Aan unusual?

Tanjung Aan is known for pale, round grained sand often likened to peppercorns or tiny pearls, coarser and more rounded underfoot than ordinary fine sand. It gives the beach a distinctive pale glow in the dry season light and is a big part of why the bay photographs so well.

How do you get to the Merese hill viewpoint?

Bukit Merese rises at the eastern end of Tanjung Aan and is a short drive then an easy walk up the grassy headland. It gives the wide view over the twin bays and the open sea that you see in most photos of the area, and it is best for sunrise or the golden hour before sunset.

Are there beach clubs at Tanjung Aan?

Yes. Aloha Beach Club sits on the sand with a relaxed setting, cocktails, seafood and live music toward sunset, and a row of simple warungs lines the bay for cheaper food and a rented sunbed. Opening hours and any minimum spend are set by each venue and are to be confirmed.

How do I get to Tanjung Aan Beach?

Tanjung Aan is about fifteen minutes east of Kuta Lombok by scooter or car, down a paved road to a parking area behind the sand. There is no public transport, so most travellers ride or drive, and a small parking fee is usually charged. Pair it with the Merese hill viewpoint just beyond.
