Lombok sits just east of Bali and a touch south of the equator, so the temperature barely shifts across the year and the sea stays warm in every month. What changes is the rain and the crowds, and that is what should drive your timing. The island runs on two seasons, a dry one from roughly May to September and a wet one from November to March, with the peaks of July, August and the Christmas weeks layered on top.

The detail worth knowing for Lombok is the light. The dry months bring a high, clean clarity that lays a hard turquoise over the southern bays and makes the pale sand glow, which is the whole reason these beaches photograph the way they do. The wet months soften everything to a greener, moodier palette that has its own appeal if you do not mind the showers and the slower pace.

This guide walks the year month by month, with a quick grid for the headline conditions and longer notes on the months that matter most. We have been honest about the trade offs, because the driest, brightest weeks are also the busiest, and the cheapest, quietest weeks come with afternoon rain. For the short answer, aim for the shoulder months of May, June and September.

The notable months

When each month earns its place

May. One of the loveliest months on Lombok. The dry season is settling in, the hills are still green from the rains, and the heavy crowds are weeks away. The southern bays are calm and clear, the light is clean for photographs, and prices sit comfortably below the high season. A strong all round window for swimming and slow days on the sand.

June. The dry season at its most comfortable, with sunny days, lower humidity and a light breeze that softens the heat. Crowds are building toward the peak but it does not yet feel busy, and the water on the south coast is at its most inviting. A great month for almost any kind of Lombok trip, and a fine time for the view from Merese hill.

July. The driest, brightest weather of the year, which is exactly why it is the busiest. The southern bays fill with day trippers and buggies by late morning, the clubs in Kuta Lombok are at their liveliest, and rooms need booking well ahead. The trade off is dependable sun and a strong, clean dry season swell for surfers on the south coast.

August. The other peak month, with the same superb dry weather and the same crowds and prices as July. If you come now, start early to have Tanjung Aan or Mawun closer to yourself before the tour vans arrive, and book your stay and any daybed in advance. The surf on the south coast is typically consistent through this stretch.

September. Arguably the sweet spot of the year. The peak crowds thin while the dry, sunny weather holds, so you get July quality light and calm with far more room to breathe and gentler prices. A superb month for the southern beaches, the sunsets and a quieter climb up Merese hill.

December. A month of two halves. The wet season is underway with humid days and heavier showers late in the month, yet the Christmas and New Year weeks are among the busiest and priciest of the year. Come for the holidays if you want company on the sand, but expect rain and book the festive dates early.

Good questions

Before you go

What is the best month to visit Lombok?

For most travellers it is the shoulder months of May, June or September, when the dry season light is at its cleanest but the July and August peak has not arrived. The southern bays are calm and photogenic, the roads are easy and prices sit below the high season.

When is the dry season in Lombok?

The dry season runs from roughly May to September, with sunny days, low humidity and the calmest water on the south coast. July and August are the driest and the busiest. The wet season is from around November to March, warm but with frequent afternoon showers.

Is the sea warm enough to swim all year in Lombok?

Yes. The sea around Lombok stays warm all year, generally around 27 to 29 degrees, so swimming is comfortable in any month. The bigger factors are rain, crowds and the current at certain bays, since some southern beaches such as Mawun can pull a stronger current whatever the season.

Is it worth visiting Lombok in the wet season?

It can be. The wet season from November to March brings green hills, very thin crowds and the best value of the year, and the rain often falls as a warm afternoon burst rather than all day. You trade reliable sun for a quieter island, so keep the plan flexible and aim for morning beach time.

When is Lombok most crowded?

July and August are the peak, with the Christmas and New Year weeks busy too. The southern bays fill with day trippers and the clubs are at their liveliest then. For dry weather with more room and softer prices, the May, June and September shoulders are the smarter window.
